CB750 clutch stack height - not thicker than the hub?
« on: April 10, 2013, 03:37:11 AM »
I have searched the forum, but did not get a clear answer about how many clutch plates possible to use. Thickness of used clutch plates vs clutch hub model decides if 7 or 8 friction plates are possible, right? 7 x 3,55mm,  1x3,45 (slanted outer with wider ears fitting the basket) plus 7 metal plates. (Friction plates from CycleX)

My clutch is this model: http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb750k6-four-european-direct-sales_model14384/partslist/E09.html#results

EDIT:
Note! My clutch has not the thicker riveted metal plate as later clutches. See K6 to US

See attached photos where the 8:th friction (fiber) plate make the total stack height to 41,75mm. Hub appr. 1mm less. The bottom part of clutch (clutch plate, pos 7 @ CMSNL) will then not line in with its splines into the hub (pos 2 @CMSNL). These 2 parts must be lined up and dock into each other few mm and never appart, right?

After some thinking and browsing around here among all old clutch issues, I found the answer.
I'll go for the OEM std with 7 friction plates + 6 metal + Heavy Duty clutch springs from vintagecb750.com (Part #: 39-1047). Clutch stack cannot be higher than the clutch hub, clutch plate docked and lined in with its splines too.

My old bad Heavy Duty clutch set with 8 friction + 1 metal had thinner friction plates . It was not made for my clutch when the outer friction plate must have wider ears.

Good information about clutch assembly: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=32603.msg986849#msg986849
The "sharp" edges of the metal plates go toward the engine: the rounded edge side toward you.
