You got a Mikuni carb guy yet? ;)

No, but I am hoping you are one!

Keihin's are all I know, but I might be willing to learn Mikunis for someone who has been such a strong supporter of the Rack Rebuild Thread.

The 28's shouldn't be that difficult to tune, there should be tuning information in the back of the service manual (including 'for racing')
They look way better with 4:4, going to be pretty awesome when finished

I bought a spare motor from Goddfrey on here, has no carbs, so am shopping for a 28mm rack. I do have the service manual, havent needed to go to carbs area yet

From what I remember from rebuilding a set of vm26's last summer they're pretty easy to work on, oem parts were a bit more on the pricey side than oem Honda kits for my pd's but still not bad. Plus there's jap made kits for the gaskets that that were pricey as hell. Kawi doesn't do a kit for them so I had to order individual orings and gaskets to rebuild mine.

Kaw makes very few parts for these bikes, but there are two good suppliers here in the US that imports the good Jap parts. No issue finding anything...if you are willing to pay.

Ha!  I love your rack thread, bet these other guys dont know.

You have the ultrasonic cleaner, a must in my opinion for a good rebuild.

If you can 'work' Kei-Hin slide carbs, the Mikuni's are the same, but different/
Main jets have a different thread and there are 3 styles
Pilot jets also come in a few different styles but if your not swapping between 'Smooth bore', CV, and slide carbs you wont have any problem.

Yeah, shouldn't be a problem. Actually, was working on a Mikuni last week on my Suzi TS250.  Unstuck the slide ok that small 20mm(?) carb.

Yes, but the VM26's were also on the kz1000 and pretty much all the gaskets and orings are still available oem. I don't know about oem jets as I just cleaned what was already in there, the only gaskets I didn't order oem was the top cover gasket. (Like the fiber gasket on the keyhole top of the pd's.) They were really expensive, I just got a set from Sirius but all the orings and float bowl gaskets I used oem parts. My local Kawi dealer had them for me within a week.

Hey Bwaller - thanks for chiming in. Besides the obvious increase in performance, are there other reasons that I should consider getting them?

I'm very satisfied with the current performance, I ride all twisty roads in my area, I don't need to go faster! We've all heard the stories of the handling of these Z bikes, I am very conscious of it when I ride.
Doubt the smooth bores could make it run smoother (pun intended) the bike runs fantastic with the 26's. But, what will happen when I change exhaust?

Not at all but I haven't really pushed it yet. It came with a 16" rear rim and a 12 year old Bridgestone, so it wouldn't have been smart to do so.  I have the correct size rim and new Avons, front and rear, but have only had a chance to do a test ride.  I'll be on it this weekend, weather permitting.
So far, it feels every bit as solid as my K4 that I push to 8/10's, have not felt any type of Shake or shimmy in the front end.  It originally came with a steering stabilizer but mine is missing it, it is on the list to be ordered and installed.
BTW - I previously had a '78 Kaw 1000 LTD, that bike handled fantastic.

Look like standard 76 or older Kehin cb750 carbs. Like the way he looped his two vent holes together with a piece of rubber hose, bet that works out well ;)

Took the Z out for a nice ride yesterday, now that I have two new tires and the proper 18" rear wheel, I felt more comfortable to push it a bit.
The motor runs strong, never missed a beat as a pushed it only to an indicated 95 a couple different times. The roads are very twisty around here so it's not like I have miles and miles of straights to do a high speed run.

Local county park...

Local winery... [a fav of the wife]

The motor does POP like hell on decel, obviously 'cause of the lack of a muffler with back pressure. I know the fix...

So, let's back up a few days. It was our daughters bday last week and the wife ordered her a Coach[?] bag, so shes been checking for a box every day after school, but shes been disappointed 'cause most every day I get boxes of MC parts!
Well, Friday afternoon, she sends me a text stating there's a huge box at the door, she can hardly drag it in! That's no Coach bag!
So I cut outta work early knowing what the box is...

And I open it very carefully....

The pics don't do it justice, the chrome is absolutely stunning.
So these are made by Doremi in Japan, supposedly by using the same tooling as the original.
Anyone familiar with this company?

I started to pull the old exhaust and stopped. I want to thoroughly clean the lower engine case with Gunk Engine Cleaner before I put the new pipes on, but dont want to risk getting anything in the head, so I thought it best to do with the old pipes on.
Rained all day today, very rare, and had to deal with an emergency at work, so did not have a chance to work on it today. No rush, want to do it right...
