In Arkansas I think it says,"If they are on there, they have to work." So, it seems that if you don't want to deal with turn signals, take them off. At least in Arkansas anyway. Later on, Bill

I thought that all NEW motorcycles sold in the US now were required to have signals. But I'm wondering how these guys like Jesse James and OCC sell bikes without 'em. Is that something the owner has to deal with once he takes delivery? I can't imagine Jesse puting turn signals on any of his bikes. ::)
When these "custom" guys sell bikes to the general public, they must be delivered with working turn signals by law. When I used to work at the v-twin shop, we actually ordered a ElDiablo (Jesse James bike) for a customer. When it arrived, it had a makeshift turn signal setup, with all the wiring exposed, and the turn signals were actually double-stick taped to the frame  ;D ;D The guys at WCC knew the new owner was gonna remove them, so why bother making it a part of the bike..

Their are ways around everything...

I think whatever I can do to be visible, I do..I have stock turnsignals, tail and headlight. I've seen bulbs that blink when you put the brakes on, and I think that would be a good idea. My favorite riding shirt is a white long sleved T-shirt. I had a friend once say "Man, when I look in my mirror, all I can see is your shirt flapping in the breeze!" It means he sees me.. I always ride with my headlight on too...there's a guy in town who rides an Old Black Beemer, and almost never has his light on..he's invisible! I think color is really important too. I used to have a Beige Subaru Wagon, and even though I always had my lights on, I got cut off all the time...On the other end, I had a bright yellow Ford Focus, and in 3 years, I don't think I had even one cutoff!

I got some little LED strips which I am planning on wiring up over the winter to "shine" on my motor.
More of a "Hey , See me on the motorcycle" kinda thing more than a "cool" thing..
The more lights at night the better.

I just need to stop before my bike looks like this... ::)

Though , I am sure he never gets cut off...

I will not run with out them even thou I do not like the ones that stick way out in no were land. But on my 750 I have three brake lights and the out side ones are also turn lights. I also use my horn and head light flashing between high and low to keep from getting hit. I 'm now looking at some side marker lights along for driving light for the same reason. Hey may be I will end up turning this thing into a yellow gold wing wantabe ya think LOL

I've been runnig without indicators for a while now, and don't think it's a good idea. I'm considering wiring up my motorjacket with lights. it will keep my bike looking better, and if I put the turnsignal under my armpit, the jacket will still look ok when not on the bike :P

I don't like the original signals, they are too big. But w/o any signals it's too dangerous in my opinion,..especially in Germany.
The only one i have mounted are signals for the handlebar, called bull's eye signals.
They are looking very cool and make the handlebar wide with a good reflection to the front and rear.

I'm a minimalist.  Nicole only has on 'er what is needed to get down the road.

If you're gonna remove your indicators, make sure you remove the entire system, including the switches.  Also check your state for the last allowable year for non-signalled bikes.  Someone had written that in NJ it was 1972.  I'm next door in NY and anything before 1985 doesn't need signals (the whole system, not just the indicators).

When I hand signal, I exaggerate the movemnets.  A left turn ends with my hand in a gun shape as opposed to sticking out flat and straight.  A right turn is a quick, slightly rounded movement up into position.  I know it draws attention better that way because some friends and I had experimented years ago with how these movements appear from the rear.  Anything to refocus the average 'moron in a cage' is a good thing.

I also wear a yellow and black Icon leather jacket, and my bike's frame is yellow.  I'm visible in traffic.

No, you are wrong, it's not a magazine pic, it's a photo-scan of my old K2 (sold it a couple of years).
I will mount the same to my new K1 project.
Yes, the signals are cool, it's from two German manufacturers (Hella or Kellermann), costs EUR 15.00-20.00 each
they signals are very popular on old bikes here (production has been started in the 70s,..until yet
w/o any modifications).
If you like 'em, search on ebay.de for the German word for bull's eye signals "Ochsenaugenblinker"
and you will find 'em.

Sorry, i have forgotten to say, that the sizes of the signals depends on your handlebar diameter,
there are different sizes available. Think about it, if you are going to place a bid.

I've heard a "Conspiracy Theory" of sorts put forth that people cut off people in expensive cars because the their thought process is "They have an expensive car, ergo they must be rich.  If they hit me, I'm gonna sue them for a gillion-bazillion dollars."  Whereas a guy driving an older beater car CLEARLY has no money, so there's no point in suing him.

Interesting theory.

I have heard the same. When I had an old truck almost no one cut me off. When I got a new black shiny one boy did they ever cut me off. Now back to an old exploder and every one stays away. May be they hope I will not have a blow out and roll over on them .ya think. But to many times I also here people say "but I never saw the bike”. Well hang up, look around and rive then you may start seeing things you never saw before like the bike right in front of you!

Hand signal knowledge is still a requirement of both motorcycle and car road tests here in BC, although the only people who tell me they use them are bicyclists.

FWIW, imagine riding in England and then hand signalling right, which involves using the right hand! Yikes.....as soon as you let go of the gas the bike wants to slow down. Great fun, especially if you are being tested in the pissing rain.

We talked about conspicuity in the theory part of the motorcycle training course I used to teach, and the subject of hand vs. electrical signals regularly came up. Students invariably commented that the only time they really noticed hand signals being used on a bike was when said bike was large, noisy, covered in chrome and ridden by a large gentleman clad in black leather, with a beard, and an ashtray on his head. The feeling was that it was prudent to be aware of the motorcyclist because they would not want to get involved in an accident with him.

Reminds me of when I had an old 74' Dodge Royal Monaco (ex-Arkansas State Police car). It was always funny to see someone come over a hill and slow down when they'd see me in my old Blue & White. It was good for kicks.  Later on, Bill

Same experiences here.  In the early '90s I had a '67 Impala (or Belair or Biscayne - it had no model tags on it), and then a '73 Delta 88.  Both were paint-faded, and the Olds was rusted out with a shredded vinyl top.  No one came near me in either of those cars.

Hey Zip, just checked your pics. I'm not much on chops but, yours is definitely different. The horn is cool. I like the front end because it's not stuck way out there. I don't know that I could handle the hardtail nowdays but I do like the look. Later on, Bill

I don't think it's a mater of wawnting to hit someone w ith money.  Insurance fraud isonly committed by a small percentage of drivers out there.  I think the motivation is more often than not plain old envy.  Like: I might drive (insert POS here) but I can still cut off that hummer.  That ferrarri might have 12 cylinders, but my escort just cut him off, I must be a man now.  In the event of it being a female driver, she may have just as much of a jealous ego as a guy, or she may be putting makeup on her cellphone or whatever it is they are doing as they pretend to be "driving."  In any event, I wouldn't worry too much about someone trying to hit you because you're rich, but watch out for anyone who isn't as cool as you- cuz they're gunnin...
