Look what found its way into my garage ($75 1974 CB550K)
« on: May 27, 2013, 03:48:57 PM »
This rainy Memorial Day I became the proud owner of another CB550, a year older than my rider and quite a bit less whole than the first one was when I got it.  No carbs, no tank, no seat . . .sound forks, good hubs, engine turns over smoothly, rims might be salvageable, and the frame looks straight and seems solid, if rusty.  Started tearing it down, then decided that the garage is cluttered enough -- I need to be systematic about this.

The most important part for me is the engine.  Sooner or later, my '75 will need all those 40-year-old gaskets and rubber parts replaced, and tearing down the '74 engine will provide safe practice.  And maybe in three or four years, some two-wheeled creation will roll out of the garage and actually run.  So I call this bike"the Blank Canvas".

It's been a few years but I bought a complete CB 750 for $30 once. That will never happen again.

Man. Holding out for that bargain basement backup myself, shoot I'd be happy with a spare engine for that price. Nice score  8)

And, you got a seat, a tank -- I bet it even runs. Something tells me $75 is the least I'll pay before this bike hits the street.

Nice price! I bought basically the same roller for $190 in NYC. I'm putting a CB650 engine in mine.

Tews19, I plan on using the motor as a guinea pig to teach myself to overhaul the running 550.  And the frame does seem sound -- I won't be able to resist cleaning and painting it and hanging parts on it, but it'll be some years until it hits the street.

That's my plan for the frozen engine I got in the '74 titled bike.

I had the head off my SL175 way back in the early 80's, but I have never done a full engine build. The stuck engine is a perfect candidate. Maybe I'll pick up one of those inexpensive 600cc kits and build it up.

It should be fun and educational.
