if you are still looking, I have a set of
NEW DURO FRONT AND REAR TIRES
3.50-19 + 4.00-18
Part# 97-012 & 97-143

Brand new still in box, I just didn't use them... Paid $120 plus $27 shipping.
I'd take less for them if you wanted them

I probably am not getting them for a few weeks. I am just figuring out my budget on the bike. Right now I am in the slow process of prepping the engine for paint (what a drag).

I have to ditto on the 712's. I'm on my third rear and my second front right now ... Personally,I get about 4k miles out of a rear (at best) and the fronts last me about 10k.

A half-price tire that only lasts half as long seems like false ecomony, unless you perform your own labor to install and balance, or really only ride occasionally where the rubber in the tires would harden long before the tread wears out.  Maybe 4k miles is not typical life for others?

I thought 5.1 was a typo. Don't think I've seen one that wide on a stock rim.

Doesn't matter what size is on tyre, the rim is what you need to look at.
1.85x18 means you shouldn't fit anything wider than a 110 section and to be honest, even that is really too wide for rim

I'm sure someone will post link to 'correct' tyre width chart, if not I'll find it later

4k miles is about right for a soft compound tire on a cb750...I get about 4-7k miles out of what ever tire, ride hard, and usually leave a back tire on quite aways past what is prudent  ...because yeah they are expensive.  I think I got the most miles out of a Metzeler.  Dunlop seem to wear out the fastest but are great in the process.  One thing if you don't mount your own tires...if you have a decent bike shop in the area, they will usually mount and balance for cheap/free if you just pay a little more and buy the tire from them...
If it works good, it looks good...

Here's link, grey blocks are  max/min size/rim width
http://www.mtsac.edu/~cliff/storage/gs/Motorcycle_Rim_Width_Tire_Size_Chart.pdf

Personally I've had tyres wear out in as little as 1,800 miles on 550 (Pirelli Phantom)
They give zero warning when they are about to 'let go', Michelin or Continental are way more 'forgiving' although any modern tyre will be superior to original equipment

Really?  You guys must really be pushing these 550's around!  The worst tire mileage I've ever had was 4K miles on a set of Dunlop D204s (known for not lasting long, but they sure were sticky) on a sportbike that I used primarily for 'Sunday morning rides' around the local twisty back roads.  The highest mileage tires that I had were ME33/ME99 Metzlers, but they were a little sketchy when cold.

I am hard on tires.Especially the rear. Some of my riding buddies hate to be behind me because they say I'm constantly spinning and tossing up gravels. ;D My buddy owns a bike shop so I buy tires from him,but mount and balance is free since I help him out on odd jobs and m&b my own rubber. ;) On his machine of course. Helps to have buds in the right places!
The darn fool didn't know it couldn't be done...so he went ahead and did it anyway.

I never did 'burn outs' or deliberate wheel spin, tyres just don't seem to last me very long
It could well be because of stiff suspension though, that suited my riding style
Often, the tyres would wear out towards the edges before the center (when I lived in Britain, lots of real nice 'lanes' to thrash through  ;D)
Footrests don't last long either  ;) ;)

Over 2200 miles on my cheapie Cheng Shin 130x80. No problems so far in all weathers.

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I only worry about tires is when it rains! Do I go into a corner hard? Not with suspect rubber

I use those Cheng Shin 'Arrowmax' copies on my XS650, get around 4~6,000 miles OK in the wet but not spectacular, better than the Dunlop 491 front though

Conti is rolling out a new radial designed for classic bikes like ours. I really want to put them on the 550 I'm building, but they will be rather spendy, so I may have to pass for this set.

so to the PO, did you get the tires and how are you liking them?  I am about to purchase a Shinko 712 rear to replace a worn down Dunlop 404.

i had the cheng sing barracudas (100/90-19 front and 120/90-18 rear) for 5 years and 7k miles roughly.  there towards the end the bike was really getting squirrely in corners and had that "want to slide away" in long sweepers.  never did wear into the cords but the rear was most definitely done for.  i have the bridgestone spitfire 11's bow in 110/90-19 and 130/90-16 mounted on '82 kawasaki kz750 enkeii mags.  i believe my front rim is 2.15 and the rear is 4 something.  the front fills the '76 gl1000 front end and fender nicely.

Thats what is occurring with the 404, pretty unnerving.  I have been hesitant to break or accelerate when on painted surfaces of the road, or cross those lines for that matter in a turn.
