Belgium and France on 550K3
« on: July 30, 2013, 11:48:45 AM »
600 miles in 3 days 2 up through France and Belgium in hot sunshine. Averaged 62 mpg mainly on B roads and country lanes. Never went on a highway. The only problem was No3 carb started flooding twice - obviously a bit of dirt floating around in bowl which got stuck under the needle valve. Blowing up the overflow tube sorted it immediately but I guess I should drop the carb bottom and clean it out.

OH MY GOD i'm so envious!  Looks like you had a good group to ride with!

I'm planning a trip across Europe for (hopefully) next summer and would love to be able to take my bike - but that's unrealistic.
My cousin has a home in Brussels, which I'm hoping she'll let me use as the starting point of my journey.  :)

Never thought of blowing through the overflow tubes with the carbs mounted, thanks. And of course thoroughly jealous of your trip. I go to france regularly (Brittany), and every time I am there I wish I had a motorcycle.

Awesome! a new travel post with pics. Makes me jealous and envious at the same time.  8)

Never thought of blowing through the overflow tubes with the carbs mounted, thanks.

The over-flow tube in the modern PD carbs have a bit different function the older 550's. Not sure it would work. At least I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how it could work. If my over flows start to drip i shut off the tap and turn it back on again. What ever crud is blocking the float jet will clear out with a burst of fuel.

I would love to do a tour like that. I have always wanted to.  I've been to Daytona, Myrtle Beach and Laconia Bike weeks a bunch of times but I've never taken a bike tour like this.

My 400 flooded like that (no.2 carb) from time to time, my cure - a healthy tap with a screwdriver handle. ;D
