TEC are the best points for this bike, highly recommended.

Would you suggest that I replace the entire assembly or just the points?

Just the points should be fine.  Do you know what you currently have?

Found a good looking original TEC points and plate set for $10. Probably won’t do anything unless I notice any issues.

Debating on wether or not I should update the bulky OG connectors, too.

Kenny, future contender for BOTM... Nice work on the bike.  You found a good deal on the TEC plate and points. Any running issues and I would be installing that plate.
The original connectors likely only need a good cleaning and tighten any female connectors that aren't a snug to fit.

Ha, right on.

I found my wiring harness box, so it’s tame now.

So, I unplugged the turn signal beeper- is it ok to just leave it disconnected, or can that cause an issue?

Got it all tuned up and it’s running a lot smoother. I still have some fine tuning to do, because I’m not happy with the idle right now. And I definitely need new tires- they look good, but they’re old.

Turn signal beeper disconnected won't be an issue unless wiring w was able to short on the bike, if connection covers are in good shape, then no risk of that.

Great, good to know. I think I’ll leave the harness and connectors as-is unless I have any issues. It seems to be in good enough condition- though I’m at least going to clean up the connections and use dialectric where necessary.

I have some new lighting coming, and need to clean up the bucket. There are way too many temporary connectors, and according to the wiring diagram, some of it is incorrect. It works though, sort of.

The brown wire (rear brake) is spliced into the white (headlight).

When the headlight is on low beam, the instrument cluster lights up along with the front turn signals. When the brights are on they all turn off.

Low:

High:

When I disconnect that brown, the headlights work, but nothing else. However, the turn signals do work as expected.

Are the front signal lights supposed to be on at all when running? I didn’t think so.

What a cluster #$%*:

As I was fixing my ground issue, I was sitting next to the bike just thinking, and ended up taking this pic. I thought it was pretty cool.

After messing around with the wiring, installing the new headlight, fixing the grounds, a few of the wires kept breaking, so I decided to replace the entire harness.  Seems silly to have that dirty ol turd of a harness that I can't trust.  Now I know why the previous owner hacked it up and spliced some wires with others.  Seems like half the wires in the bucket were all attached to black or white at one time or another. Ugh, what a mess.  Turns out the Brown/White wire is broken somewhere and a few others are close.

After creating the diagram and going over the wires on the bike, turns out that it's really not that complicated at all.  I was always intimidated by it because it looked daunting and it was a mess.

I bought a reproduction harness, but wish I could've found one that is closer to the real thing with all the correct colors.  Carpy's has one, but it says it's for the 77 and 78.  I haven't looked to see what the diff is, but there is a separate wire that I'm not sure what it is. Anyone have any idea? I guess I can ask them.

Anyway, that'll make me feel better once I do that.

It is this very reason why I re-wire all these bikes (though I use an mUnit). Why hassle with 40+ hacked up wiring constantly causing intermittent outages and shorts… ::) Correct colors or not, just track the differences and make a small laminated copy (replacing stock with your replacements) for a record. Makes troubleshooting later so much easier.

Definitely. It’s been pissing me off and after all this time no reason to half-ass this.

Thank you, sir!

My harnesses showed up today. I know what I’ll be starting on this weekend.

Started installing the new harness and sub harness  today. Looks to be pretty straightforward so far- just a matter of mapping the different wire colors. The horn worked, so at least I know I have something right :)

I’m also putting in 400F bars at the same time.

You'll like the 400F bars more that the stock 550 bars.  I recently put them on my Bomber...

I really like the grips.

I got the harness in and everything is working perfectly except for the turn signals. I don’t know if the relay is busted or what. I have a Black, Grey, and Green wire to connect, and it should be the Black and Grey, but it doesn’t work in either configuration. The black has 12+ volts, the grey has zero, and the green has 0.25V. When I tried the green one, the relay freaked out, so I’m wondering if I fried it, or what. Not quite sure yet.

Anyway, I’m stoked that all the lights work correctly, are bright, the starter works, the clutch switch finally works in gear, and it’s nice and clean now. My part-time OCD was getting triggered by the hack-job the PO did.

BLK brings power to the Relay.
Grey takes power from Relay to hand control.
Green is always a Ground.

The stock relay can sometimes not behave without the motor running because insufficient current is produced by the battery alone to “trip” it.

Turns out that the Grey (Green/White in new harness) was in the wrong place in the sub harness connector. I moved it and I’m in business! Just had to sleep on it. Not sure why I didn’t do a continuity test last night.
