Everybody worries, but my 500 does just fine, and I ride it like I stole it

That said, if the lifter cup is crumbling, or the clutch lifter rod is broken, it won't shift like it should. The cup is an easy fix with a decent used replacement, but a broken rod is more complicated. If you pull the left side engine cover, you can inspect both parts easily, and properly grease them too.
