mufflers options?
« on: July 25, 2013, 09:09:23 AM »
My friend and I are building a custom exhaust for my 750K, we've got all the piping and made a mock up and we're getting ready to start welding it all up but I still don't know what I want to do about mufflers. Making some would be challenging with the resources available, so the next option is to buy, which I don't mind except that the mufflers I've looked at that fit the bill don't fit the budget. Any suggestions? I almost want to just run straight pipes but I did that on my last bike and it sounded good but it was LOUD and got old after while riding it daily (especially starting it at 4 am to go to work). So I definitely want to run mufflers and I'm trying to keep the budget down to around $150 for both pipes (building a 4-2 system), dime city has several mufflers that I like in that price range but the reviews say they're pretty loud and the quiet-core mufflers run around $130 per muffler. Is that about the going rate for my needs? Any place else I should be looking? Anyone on here make mufflers?

I've got the 18" (cone engineering)quiet core from DCC, and its awesome.
before that I ran a 7" long (2.5"OD) insert in my 4 into 1....it was called the DB Killer.
got it on feebay from the UK for about $45  It was nice, good sound, decent backpressure and easy to tune too, but i didnt like the look of a 4 into 1 short pipe...

Since you can weld and flybox mentioned cone engineering, why don't you get components and make your own?

I'm getting a 18" quiet core this winter for my 4-1. +1 on Cone Engineering.

I think I may go this route, I'd love to get some quiet-core's from DCC but that's a bit too pricey for me at the moment. I put together a list and I'm having my engineer/welder/mechanic/best friend look it over to make sure I got everything before I put in an order. Thanks for your help guys I'll keep ya posted on what I end up getting.

All a muffler does is to restrict the flow.
You can use washers and vary the size of the hole .

You do not need any fiberglass packing to blow out particles into the air to breathe.

Just drill holes or insert a washer in the end of the exhaust with a large hole in it.

I took a crappy 4 inch megaphone I got with my 4-1 and made a cone outlet out of a computer tower. Compass marker and tin snips is all you need. I welded a small seat around the inside of the megaphone so the cone portion was remove able. Got some eBay motorcycle exhaust packing for 8 bucks with free shipping and wrapped that around the baffle that cane with the junky megaphone

Thought I'd update this incase anyone else has similar curiosities, I went with the shorty mufflers from Dime City, $30 each I figured what the hay. I really like them, a lot of the reviews said they're really loud, they're not. They have a nice tone, kind of growly and sound even better as you take it up the tach. I cut the muffler off my last bike made a turn down tip for it, it was obnoxiously loud, didn't sound bad but I'm sure the neighbors hated me. These things are great, definitely glad I got them, I'll try and get some photos posted later.

P.S.- Thanks for all the great suggestions and info guys!

Good point I had it wedged in between my car and the bushes so couldn't get a good angle but I'll get a good one next time I'm out with it. I was a little apprehensive about the shortys, reviews said they're really loud, but I love them they sound great!

There are many options in the takeoffs from Harley's on eBay. I got a pair of dyna  slip ons and modified it to 4 into two. Very quiet and efficient!

Those "shorty" style mufflers have been around since at least 1960 or earlier. They won't let you down, and no fiberglas particles to blow out into the air for all of us to breathe.

Beautiful photo on a beautiful day!

It reminded me that I have a new set of H-D Dyna slip ons just like that in my shop. I just did not think about using them on my CB750.
The bike is gone now but if anyone is interested they can contact me.
