Topic: Need some advice on a 73 750

I was thinking of buying this but I'm looking for some advice  from the experts.... Here's his listing


Selling my 1973 Honda CB 750. Approx 23,000 miles. I originally bought the bike from its econd owner with plans to turn it into a little chopper but never had the space to work on it. I've just been using it ats a commuter bike/running project.
Tires are less than a year old
New chain
New battery
Rebuilt front brake
I have a set of cap air filters (as opposed to an air box) that'll come with it
Tank was sealed by previous owner

No spedo, it's there but no cable
Paint is faded/cracked on tank
No turn signals
Small air leak (I think)
Oil leak, so bad compression, when it gets hot (say after several minutes on the freeway) it loses power and the rpm go way down regardless of the position of the throttle, then goes back to normal a few minutes later or after stopping for a couple minutes
A new gasket or two should fix it right up

$1500 or best offer

No deal in my book.  A gasket or two should fix it?  Doubtful, but do you know that the motor has to be pulled to change the head gasket??

No deal. In these parts for $1500 it should be a decent runner. Now...you could bring your trailer and wave some cash. Tell him motor has to come out to fix...yadda yadda yadda...maybe you can get it for under $1K. You need to give yourself some leeway here as it sound like there could be some other issues that will cost you. 23,000 miles on a speedo that is not connected...so what is the real mileage??? Where is the title and how hard is it to get one there? Welcome to the forum...let us know how you come out...

Here is the bike...you might get more replies when the guys can see it. Click to enlarge the pic. I see the bike has OEM exhaust on it. That is worth something right there. However, if it is the original exhaust be sure to look at the bottom of the pipes for rust and bubbles. If they have been replaced and those pipes are really good, then they are worth about $800 right there. Honda no longer makes the OEM pipes and they are getting hard to find now. If you are looking to take the bike back to original, that seat is aftermarket. You can get a new one from Honda yet for about $250.

tks guys i think i'll pass on this one...gonna look at a cb750A thats been parked for 25 years it looks good and the engine turns over he also has carb kits for the bike and asking $500 or B/O, talked to him it was his dads and he gave it to him so i think $300 will grab it...any + or -'s with automatics?

it seems no matter what bike with a $1500 tag needs work, so i should be looking for Clear Title, No missing parts..

earlier years 69-75 seem to command top dollar no matter what..time is on my side as i will end up with a 750

+1, me too.  Are you in CA?  If yes, the gold dude will find you a good deal.
I wouldn't let a few missing parts stop me from buying a decent bike, parts are cheap and plentiful for CB750's.

Agreed...the automatics do not command much $$$ because most guys want to shift...that is part of owning a bike. You will put some money into the automatic, but not get much back out of it. The CB750 5 speed has been in demand and continues to bring some good $$$ for them. It will be your best chance to recoup what you put into it. Plus, the girls dig the guys on the CB's

got a call in on a 75 cb750 its been modded with a longer front end but nothing magor and he sent me a video of it running, clear title

I've never seen a head gasket that would just leak when it was hot, but theoretically, it could happen. What's more likely is an undiagnosed fuel or ignition problem, and that aint no big deal. Get it cheap, fix it easy..
