Deployment Question 2: What new bike with all the money?
« on: October 21, 2006, 08:13:13 AM »
First off:

Mods, please leave this in "Open" for a while even though it's a poll.  I would be going within a few weeks and I want this to get maximum exposure before that and "Open" has more of that than "Polls".  Thank you.

Now, what to spend a piece of the fat cash I am getting on?  Finally get the K0 of my dreams?  Or the super-bad CBX with its six cylinders, six carbs, six pipes, two cams and 105 horsepower?  Perhaps build my Cafe Racer, either from a 750 or a 400?

Or, and this is an oddball, buy a new bike?  I mean, it would be new, it wouldn't need any fiddling, and it would be a super-fast, hair-on-fire roadburner, like the original 750 was back when it was new.

Honestly though, I'm leaning toward either the Cafe Racer or the CBX.

Figure roughly a 10K budget, give or take.

A prisitne, like new 750Four, like a '78 CB750K.  Or maybe a '75 Triumph Trident, if you like the need to frequently fiddle with your bike.  Or, if you like small, torquey, and nimble classics, an '78 SR500 thumper (they still had front/rear discs).

Most important, stay safe and come back in one piece to enjoy your new bike.  Your squad/team/platoon medic doesn't have to have you as a customer.

We'll pray for your safe return.

Well the circumstances allowing me to have the dilemma are less than nice, but I see your point.  :D

your options lead me to believe you're stuck on hondas.  if you want a fast machine consider these... busa (duh), zx12 (not a zx14 cuz they are fugly), v-max (any year will do)... i like the double x's but all of the ones i suggest were kings in their own way, ya know?  if you've never owned a modern machine that's a fun way to go.  just some thoughts.

I dont know, I would have to get a ealy 80's magna. V65 BABY!!!! I know there was the cam issue but really, it is fast, probably faster than the cbx, is still a 4 and is just plain cool. It can even hold its own with newer sport bikes. If you dont like the way it sits, get the sabre then.

You need some good picture books and time to ruminate.  Where will you live and what kind of riding?  Light little bikes- CB400F, SR500, GB500, MZ, vintage Velocette, Big honkers like a V-max or CBX, want to take a passenger on long rides thee's BMW, Harley bagger, Honda ST1300,  Get into cool stuff like a '64 BMW R60 (maybe with a sidecar), old BSA,... tons of great bikes out there.

You have a daily ride.  Find an ebay special 750, acumulate parts and tools needed, and make YOUR bike.  What fun is there in writing a fat check or making a payment.  Make a statement.

i'd argue that the point of this "all the money" thread... is the FAT CHECK.

i know when i got my financial aid i wrote one of those and it was FUN... and still is  ;D

Excellent advice so far.

Yes, I AM stuck on Hondas.  What's the level that's beyond "fanaticism"?  Because that's where I'm at with Honda.  I would consider other makes, but not Suzuki, since in my area, if you don't own a GSXR Thousand and ride it like a hooligan, you are not a "man".  It's the whole "overly-macho, too-much-testosterone, I'm-more-alpha-than-you" mentality that pervades the military.  Not knocking the military, (hell, I'm IN it), but I just tire of the non-stop machismo bull#$%*.

Ergo, I have begun to hate Suzukis with a passion

Anyway, I was thinking the CBX because I LOVE mechanical complexity and multiple cylinders, and it has SIX cylinders to keep me happy.  I also have always wanted a bike with six big megaphones ever since I saw the picture of Mike Hailwood on the RC166:

I already have a museum-quality 750, but it's an F1 (not to knock the F series), and I just LOVE the swoopy voluptousness of the K0.

The Cafe is obvious since the Honda Cafe craze is in full-swing and I could probably do it cheaper than any of the above choices.  It would also be absolutely mine, built by me to my tastes.

The big CBR is there because as happy as I am with old machinery, there's this little niggling part in my brain that is asking for a modern Literbike.  Something as totally outrageous and beastly as the original CB750 was back in 1968.

As I said, it's really down to the CBX or a Cafe, but I am going to have some time to think about it.  That CBR is calling and of course, Uncle Ernie had to go and give a bunch of other good choices.  :D

Hey, Angel

You're in ABQ, right?

The other day I saw someone on a red Honda (looked like a big Four from the back) heading west under I-25 (I can't recall, either at Central or Lomas) as I was getting ready to head up the ramp.

Could that be your bike?

AH, the 900rr. I always wanted to get a perfect '93 white, red and blue, and turbo charge it on the down low. Old school and Hella fast. That would be sweet!

"Not trying to bring any one down here, just something I read a while back.

What ever you get, be safe.
Was reading not to long ago that more military personnel were dying after getting home and buying new fast bikes than were being killed overseas.  :-[

My best wishes and prayers go with you on your tour.

You know that what you want is a nice original, low mileage '69 K0, diecast, candy blue!!!! ....Do you want to experience the tonality of the unstamped pipes?   The rattle of the clutch basket...the clatter of the camchain..etc etc......But then again, I'm biased......
