71 CB 750 build

Hey everybody, My name is Daryl.  I'm new to bikes, but not new to forums.  I own two 5th Gen honda preludes that are heavily modified, I admin and moderate two prelude forums.
I purchased this bike a few weeks ago from the second owner.  It was jam packed with era correct accessories, but I could see through it all.  I plan on doing a cafe style build, and enjoying this bike for years to come.
Here she is the day I picked her up.




I think she lasted two days before I started tearing the accessories off...
windjammer fairing, highway bars, bags, seat rest, luggage rack, gone!



First real purchase for the bike, a must have IMO


removing the fairing left me without a headlight.  I realized that the headlight mounting rings and hardware were missing, along with the OEM headlight socket.  I purchased them along with a new headlight.


had to fix quite a bit of botched wiring (solder, head strink, OEM pin connectors)


seat was the next on the list, but I had to have something I could fit a passenger on.
picked up this foam and fabric to fit to the stock pan.

after tearing the old cover and foam off the stock pan, I discovered some surface rust.  I did a rust treatment on both sides.

primed and painted the bottom of the pan.

fitted the foam to the refurbished pan

fitted the cover over the foam, and I'm pleased with the results.  p.s. I hate upholstry work haha.


painted the hinges, latch, spring, and installed new stainless hardware to hold it in place.

Parts purchased so far:
-Hanyes CB750 FOUR manual, my new best friend.
-New OEM replica side covers
-NOS OEM side cover bushings
-Footrest, kickstart, and shifter rubbers.
-NOS OEM front turn signal stems.
-NOS headlight socket.
-Deka sealed battery
-NOS rear shock bolts, nuts, washers.
-Male and female wire pins (to fix 40+ years of hacked wiring)
-Aftermarket tri bar, black dot headlight
-NOS headlight mounting bezel and trim ring
-black powdercoated mesh headlight cover
-cafe style seat
-Magnetic oil drain plug
-shock adjustment tool (since the bike already has the $300 progressive rear shocks I was going to buy).
-cafe style handle bars
-Shoei GT Air matte black helmet (most important purchase)
-rear LED turn signals (resistors also)
-rear brake light/ tag holder combo
-Flamenco black pearl paint (for tank, headlight bucket, side covers)
-Hella retro style horn
-new OEM air filter (until the pods are purchased)

Soon to be purchased:
-clutch and brake levers (shorter handles)
-slimline clutch master cylinder
-bar end mirrors
-hand grips
-tires
-new 4-1 header
-K&N individual pod filters
-front and LED turn signals
-correct 69-71 gas tank (the one on the bike is a 72)
-more responsive throttle control

Maintenance to be performed:
-spark plugs
-coils
-oil change
-new brake pads and shoes
-brake fluid flush
-possible clutch replacement (on the original still, seems to be acting up a bit)

found some NOS side cover emblems, notice the little "HM" right below the wing, the only way to tell if they are legit as far as I know.  They'll look good with the red metallic in the new paint.
I plan on plastic welding and flushing out the top emblem recess and only have the red diamonds.


new reproduction side covers, nos emblems, and bushings to install them.


new bars, to be installed once I acquire the new controls, grips, mirrors.


headlight gaurd....  most likely going to tint the stock headlight yellow and install it on that light...  I like having options.



paint should be in by next week. 
still trying to source the appropriate 69-71 tank (to replace the 72 that is currently on the bike.)
rear LED turns, tail light w/ license plate bracket in the mail. 

new tail light, tag bracket combo.  Goodbye rear fender!


paint has finally arrived........ I guess I can start working on some parts
Flamenco black pearl 97-98 prelude color, and a catalyzed hardening clear coat.


I plastic welded the top emblem recess on of my new reproduction side covers.  I coat or two of poly body filler and she will be smooth as glass


This showed up today, well a pair of these, but only one is going on the bike

Thank you sir!  I plan on keeping up the momentum as long as my wife doesn't divorce me lol.  She's not happy about the time and money I'm investing in this project.  I told her "it's better than the $13,000 I was gonna spend on that CBR1000RR."  She was not amused.

It does look good! What's the plan for the stock tank and side covers? Are those pipes rotted?????? I may be interested in buying if you selling... Send me a Pm if you are

I plan on holding onto the stock tank and side covers.  The pipes are in great condition, this bike spent its life inside a garage.  If I decide to get rid of parts, I'll let you know.

BTW, the H22a is a nice engine.. But you ever experience the F20B? Back in my ricer days when in Seattle it was pretty big out there...
I know a lot about honda car motors including the F20B.  I'm not impressed by the F20B, it's just a cheap upgrade for the civic guys.  (don't mean to sound like a snob).  I do like it better than the D series motors.
My H22 makes 250 WHP, naturally aspirated, on pump gas.

250? Nice..  No worries on the snob..... We here like it being told as is.. So no crying from me bud....The F20B was listed as 200 HP but never knew of one in person...

Are those HM 300 or 341? pipes

200 hp yes, probably around 160whp.  big difference.  The F20B is a JDM motor and wasn't available in anything in the states.  Japan, possibly europe.  I know a few guys that have them, no match for my H  ;D

the previous owner replaced the original pipes in the 80's w/ some 341's  :-[

I have a wire harness for a K0/K1 if you want one that is not hacked up..

Ive made most of the necessary repairs with solder and heat shrink.  I'm gonna hold off on the harness replacement and save the coin for other parts.  Thanks for the offer though!

both have the second coats of filler drying.

New spark plug wires arrived in the mail on friday, new wires arrived in the mail yesterday, new resistor caps today.
I installed them all (with the new rubber boots I got last week) and the bike is firing on all 4!  I'll change the oil tomorrow if time permits.  I forgot the gaskets came in last week, so fresh oil should make her run even smoother.

I'm still working on the side covers, and the new (to me) tank will be here next week.

I've yet to figure out the color code for the paint I want.  I have to stop by the acura dealership.

removed the old coil, and you can see the yellow spark plug wires, yuck!


new coil installed, new NGK iridium plugs, new black wires, new ngk resistor caps, and new rubber boots on everything.


one side cover complete, primed and ready for paint!


saw this last week, on my way to a job.  early 70's CB550.

went to see my buddy today, took a picture.


starting to work the bugs out of this bike, and getting used to riding.

the previous owner of my bike sent me a text this passed weekend.  He found some parts that he wanted to give me so I went to see him.  had a set of used pipes, the rear shock adjustment tool, and a turn signal switch with a busted housing.

and this arrived today.


I took the guts from the "new" turn signal switch and installed them in my existing housing.  turn signal switch is nice and crisp now!

finally took a few minutes to work on my tail light mount.  cut a piece of solid 1/2" aluminum rod to fit between the rear frame rails, using factory holes that were meant to bolt down the fender.  I don't have to modify the frame to change the look of the bike, which I like.
I ground a flat spot in the center of the rod, drilled and tapped for the tail light bolts.  I also drilled and tapped the ends of the rod for the frame mounting bolts.


I also purchased a NOS vintage fork brace.  Hopefully this will prevent twisting of the fork lowers when I remove the front fender.



hope to get them installed on the next warmish free day I have.

Is your bike a 1971 with 1975 tank paint scheme on it??  I'm no expert, it just looks like a 1975 scheme to me. I'm looking forward to how this turns out for you. Cheers!!

it is.............

the PO took the original tank and side covers to be painted, and the painter took off with his parts.  According to him, he purchased this tank and side covers new from honda in 73-74.....

I have another tank and side covers that I'm painting a different color, as well as some K0-K1  repop stripes in a custom color for the tank.

not much has been done to the bike since I installed the drag pipes, just enjoyed riding her for a bit.

this 4th of july, I rode the bike and lost the front tire.  I held the bike up, and we made it safely to the side of the road.

that night I ordered some parts.
Michelin pilot active front and rear tires
new tubes
new tube protectors
ebc front brake pads and rear shoes
a variety of tire changing tools


I will be filling the tubes with nitrogen once installed, and I plan on painting the wheels satin black while I have them off of the bike.  the spokes are rusty and the rims themselves are damaged from people changing tires over the years.

I'll source some DID rims and spokes to have some originals on hand in case I get tired of the black.

I'm very thankful I took that bikers safety course before I bought the bike, I believe it made all the difference in this situation.

Man, glad to hear you made it though the tire mishap.

I'm following this as I do all other CB750K builds for ideas.

Bike is looking great. The place you bought that fork brace from wouldn't happen to have another?

I've got a coupla different color tanks/side cover and headlight buckets......peeps think I have a bunch of different bikes.

What part of Delaware.....I'm originally from Laurel?

I live in Wilmington Delaware, Laurel is way south.


All parts are in, I just have to do the work.  Although I did just realize I have to take the chain apart to get the rear wheel off.  Still a bike newb, learning every day.

thanks man.  I had multiple people on another forum tell me the same thing.  I appreciate the advice.  I am still new at this and learning every step of the way.
