Saw that story yesterday. Of all the Camaros made the 69 is arguably the most sought after and valuable year so I imagine Camaro fans are sick seeing one in that shape. I hope there is at least some sort of evidence to explain what happened to the victims as to was it foul play or an accident.

I often wonder if this mystery will ever be solved.

We were kids ourselves back then and this is one of those things that I've never forgotten about.

How did both cars end up in the water? Seems odd no?

Probably a corner there, or unmarked road leading straight into lake, that they hit at high speed.

Watch for a cheap.  Low miles 69 Camaro on ebay soon..has some rust issues..

So far, I haven't seen anything indicating where in the lake these cars were found. There are a couple of bridges that cross fingers of the lake, and some of the County roads out there end in boat ramps or simply stop at the waters edge. There's been speculation that foul play was involved, but no clear indications so far. An area at the lake known locally as "Sandy Beach" was a real party spot back in the day. Even without any mind-altering substances being involved, its not hard to imagine some teens in a Camaro taking a wrong turn, going too fast, and winding up in the water. That doesn't explain why no one was able to get out, but accidents and panic are funny things.
As for the other car, its hard to even speculate until they determine who the people were that they found.
I grew up in Oklahoma and there was a similar incident involving a car and driver winding up in a different lake back in the '90s, although it only took about three years for the car to be found in that case: http://newsok.com/sunken-car-was-stolen-police-say/article/2477453

And where you are ain't no good, unless you can get away from it.

I bet they thought aliens abducted them back then!

I was wondering how a highschool kid can afford a brand new Camero. Maybe he owed someone some money and ended up in the bottom of the lake when he didn't pay it back, along with witnesses of course. Who knows.

Your high school was obviously very different from mine.  At my school most of the rich guys drove brand new 5.0 Mustangs and the rich girls drove new Corvettes or Mercedes, and they were paid for by mommy and daddy.  I was not one of the rich kids, so I drove an '86 Celica that I paid for myself.

Honestly, I've always hated this stereotype. Just driving a nice car, paid by ones mom or dad shouldn't automatically qualify a person for some hating on. My mom and dad loved me and wanted me to have nice things, OKAY?!?!?!

The few details I read were the cars were in 12 feet of water about 50 feet from a boat launch ramp not far from a marina.  Poor water clarity of about 6 to 12 inches.   Given that the car would still be about 7-8 feet from the surface...to deep for anyone to hit it with the usual outboard/sterndrive motor.  It surprises me that there would not be folks snagging lines or anchors on it over the years.  Our lakes are much clearer and heavily fished and folks get curious about what keeps grabbing their fishing tackle.  Not too long ago someone pulled a motorcycle out of a lake near here that went through the ice in the 30's or 40's.  They even found the guy that lost it and gave it back to him.  ;D
Did not say if the ramp and marina were there back in 1970.  Conflicting reports on the second 1950's vintage car.  One said it went missing in the 1950's the other just a year before the Camero.  As a teen I was a passenger in a car that went off the road and into a river.  We all got out, even in our too "stoned state". :o  The car went down at a steep angle and settled with water about level with the back window.  It was summer and the windows were down...if they are up you have to act so quick or you are done for.  Our lakes freeze enough to drive on and every year cars go through...some get out......some don't. :(  I used to ice fish alot and whenever I was on the ice it was windows down, seatbelt off, door unlatched as I drove to the fishing spot.

Actually no. Not that I remember. I grew up in a pretty blue-collar part of town (back then in the late 70's). There were some kids from wealthy families but they just drove really nice muscle cars from 10 years previous. Ironically in the same part of town and the same high school I think most kids drive new cars today! This story is in bum-F Oklahoma, probably not much different than the eco-class I grew up in. I could see it in LA or New York back then but not there. Just doesn't add up.

In a related topic we had something similar happen here in Washington: http://www.windsox.us/VISITOR/HISTORY_BUILDINGS/LAKE_CRESCENT_MYSTERY.html

Maybe he hot wired it?

Yeah i thought that maybe over the years, prpeople snagged tackle on it.. Wonder how many lures were hanging off it when they brought them up...

...the murky water makes a big difference, around here, even using a mask and snorkel it would likely be found. . But i guess if you cant see past your hands, no pint in recreational diving..
But they coulda found it dragging, especially with a magnet, they could determine size of it..
