086A carb choke flappers
« on: February 15, 2025, 11:31:41 AM »
Well today I started teardown of AlanF's 086A carbs to clean them. Whoa!! What's this me says.....
Not only are the main jets plastic 115, the choke plates have 3 of them busted 1/2 gone....what the heck??
Anyone else run into either?

Good thing I have some parts carbs.

I texted with Alan, they are carbs he bought off ebay, the po said he was having a hard time getting the bike to run right for a year, finally bought some manifold tube and a Harley carb to put on it.
Definitely one those head scratchers, some people have no idea or else they shouldn't be given tools! 🤔

Plastic mainjets? Wow!
I wonder if someone was trying to prevent the damage from MTBE? It ate on the brass ones, usually if the bike got fresh 1990s (USA) gas and was then parked for the winter - which became a decade or more.

But, it doesn't reach up to the choke butterfly!
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

And these were screwed into the vacuum ports. Yup holes straight through to the atmosphere.....makes me wonder if maybe there were rubber plug caps over them to remove when doing a syncing of the carbs?¿¿

I took a look through my notes and found this from 2006: On ebay, I picked up a nice set of carbs for my K3, the owner claimed to have taken them off of his K4 in 76 in favor of a single carb setup. These carbs got drained and blown out, wrapped in newspaper and shoved in a box on a closet shelf. Got them for  $80 or so shipped.

Nylon(plastic) main jets were a thing back in late 70's, way cheaper than brass if you were messing about with an "altered" motor

Well the 086A came on the K6 so he might have given you the wrong model they were off of.

That must have been after I left being parts manager,  after the fall of 77 as I don't remember them being available.

My chromed 750 round top carbs that came on my 550K purchased in the eighties had plastic main jets!

I think those plastic jets were a thing that came in aftermarket re-jet kit for pods and/or pipe, like Dynojet...only it was a different company.

I ran across a set in my 1986 GSXR...they seem to work and hold up as good as brass aftermarket jets.

I remember getting some of the plastic jets while trying to tune my 900 z1b back in the late 70's.

Had just built it with a MTC 1015cc kit w/cams and installed 29mm carbs, I ordered quite a few jets, and some came in the plastic variety.

IIR, I used a set while tuning, but eventually got brass to replace them.  I remember they worked fine, for as long as I used them.

I think I still have some z1 jets and needles in my tool box.

I had a  few white nylon main jets early 80's. They were cheaper and worked fine. I think it was Dynojet brand.

Had nylon rear sprocket too.

Yes I had 1 nylon rear sprocket back in the late 70s, but if I remember correctly it didn't last long enough for my traveling across the country, or the chain didn't last? Too foggy brain to be sure.
I kept the bike running properly and I had an assortment of stock brass jet sizes that I carried to change out depending on the elevation and how it was running.

My brain is also foggy about the nylon sprocket. Probably not that good as it "should".
