Topic: introducing myself and my bike

Hello everyone,

Wanted to join this forum as it seems to be wealth of knowledge about these motorcycles. I hope one day I know enough to be able to contribute something back..

I recently picked up a 1975 CB750F Super Sport. I got what I feel was a good deal on it.

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding the front end (have the forks apart -new seals, and powder coating the lowers and triple trees, installing all balls tapered bearings). My plan for the bike is to keep it clean and streamlined but stock.

I have an AGM battery I put in, and while doing so I think the old drain hose for the water battery is half broken and stuck down in between the frame. Is there any easy way to get to it besides removing the rear wheel? I tried unbolting the battery box and i can't pull it up...

Here is a picture of her. Can anyone tell me if this is a stock exhaust or aftermarket? If it's stock, was it an option at purchase and how does it compare to the straight muffler? Any info on it is greatly appreciated.

That's a stock 4 into1 header (I think) with an aftermarket muffler. Mac maybe?  Sounds like you are on the right track with your work. If you run with no front fender there are some really slick fork braces you might consider.  Check out- fast from the past.  The factory mufflers are very hard to come by, they are quiet.

 I have a 76F, I added the second front disc brake. I love it. The calipers can be moved to the back too for a more modern look and to help with handling. I made a right hand rotor fender and left mine in front.

I will look into mac and kerker mufflers and see if those match this one at all. The muffler is pretty quiet, but that's alright.

Don R - I have the front fender, I just took it off (for a bit) as I had to dremel off the tab under the fender that was holding the brake line (it was rubbing the tire). It's gonna go back on.

The 2nd brake caliper sounds like a good idea.. they aren't all that great, so a 2nd one can't hurt.

Agreed, good choice, and looks to be in really nice condition.  I have a few of these 75 750F models... I love this bike.

As Don R said, from the picture it does look like the headers are stock, but the muffler is not.

If you can find yourself a good condition NOS muffler, and can stomach the cost, they really make the look of 75/76 F bikes.  http://www.motorera.com/honda/h0750/sport/sport.htm
... that said, there was a design flaw with the original muffler where you can scrape it on hard right hand leans angles.  Now I've never done it, but I heard a few reports of this happening.

Regarding the battery overflow tube (or any of those overflow hoses that just fit between the engine and swingarm) - you can sometimes get better access with your hands (and eyes) if you remove the lower air filter box.  You have to do that when you change the air filter, and it's probably a good idea to take a look at that anyway since you just bought it.

Unbolting the battery box is more hassle than would think.  There are a lot of electronics bolted to the side of it, and an oil breather/separator connected beneath it... it's a lot of work to remove all that stuff.

I did take off the air box and clean the filter, but didn't think to go through that way. Excellent tip.. I'll try that.

Something that I'm not familiar with, are carbs. I know the basics, and just enough to get myself into trouble.

I want to drain the float bowls. Now it looks like the float bowls have drain screws (is that correct? if that's indeed what they are?) but it also looks like whoever assembled the carbs put the bowls on with the screws facing inward making them pretty much impossible to unscrew.

It looks like it's a retainer ring holding the bowls on.. can i just snap that off to undo them? I pried one, but it barely moved and i don't wanna break anything. Don't wanna muscle it until I get the ok...

welcome! as you describe it, the previous owner did install the bowls incorrectly.  the screws SHOULD be facing out so you can drain the bowls easily.  no worries.  just flip the retainer rings off and drop the bowls.  that way you get a good look at the condition of the carbs.  (a better idea than just draining them.)  put them back on so the screws are correctly oriented.    nice looking bike.

Yep... I sometimes "gingerly" pry them with a large flat head screwdriver where the retainer makes a u-bend at the bottom of the bowl

Yes, it is hard to tell from the picture but I do believe the header is stock.  For some reason, all my 75 CB750F's lean over pretty far on the sidestand, so you see more of the bottom of that collector.

Here's a picture of my stock header (also with a MAC muffler).  I removed my muffler for an AHRMA weekend I participated in over the summer.... as I was worried about clearance when making hard right turns.

Yeah I've been riding it any chance I had before the weather broke.. Last time was about a week and a half ago. She runs good.

I pulled the carb bowls and emptied them out for winter storage. Cleaned them out with some wd40 and reattached them orientated the correct way. However, looks like the drains screws are seized pretty badly.. so I'll deal with that at the end of next riding season. No need to create a problem right now.

The exhaust on mine definitely looks like a Mac exhaust.

While I have the front end apart and am waiting for the parts back from the coater.. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on cleaning up all that wiring in the front end?

I just drained the oil out of my 76F last weekend, highs in the 20s in Iowa are about my limit.  I have a second 76F that I am slowly putting together to be mostly stock, but not a full restoration.  Always liked the looks of that big stock muffler, but that may be an acquired taste!

What are you trying to clean up on the front end wiring?  The plastic box mounted on the frame to hide the wiring harness connections?

Yeah.. that box there.. also, seems like is just an abundance off over-wiring. I'd really just like the front end to be cleaner looking.

The 2 biggest peeves I have right now is the bulk of wiring and (sadly) I don't have the stock speedo and tach (I have those small after market ones the guy got from cb750.com). They work fine.. but you know, it's just not the same.

I've been strongly considering ditching the tach altogether and just finding a spot to cleanly mount the speedo, then getting rid of the metal bracket.

See? Ugh.. maybe no cafe bike start out as a cafe bike???
