Actually it's quite clean compared to the black crud stuck to the sides. I have yet to soak the rust out. $75.00 in three more gallons of evapo rust. Wanted to get as much out as possible. Vinegar and a chain really broke it down.

I was going to use Acetone but the outside of the tank is pristine. Did not want to take the chance.

Slowly she comes clean. 

Before I add any more treatment to the fuel tank I need to clean up the cap and neck area.

Oooh Ooh!  I see clean metal!  I suggest a brass brush for the neck.

Just a beautiful 73 degrees. Old Glory gently flapping in the breeze. He!! no I'm not going in the house. I'm working in the Shop. Yeah, about 10 hours worth off and on.

Decided to get the fuel tank in order. First we removed the inside of the cap.



Brass wire wheel did it's job on this side



But a soak needed on the other.





Took a break with some homemade sloppy Joe's and a cold beer then started again. New gasket.



Now on to the "maybe I shouldn't of had a beer moment?" Well, then again I needed courage for the next step.

Cut some old inner tube and taped it to the fuel tank. Had the other half hold the tank while I drilled out the broken latch.



Success! Now for the new latch assembly.



Any key will work. I used some Loctite blue on the screw.



Installed the inner cap. Cleaned the rim inside and on the edge. (slowly)



Polished it up a bit.



Filled with fresh treatment for another two week soak. 



I had enough. Margarita time!

I decided it might be time to empty the Evapo Rust out of the tank. It was the third soak on 11/17/13. Yeah, should look good by now! 

Well it does! Clean as a whistle!    The filler neck and top of cap has some surface rust that came back but will clean up when it's time.

I'll try to get some pictures posted but a full day today in the Shop. Organizing!

+1....need to do that on my Suzi tank.  What will you do now to it to prevent flash rust? ['til you fill with gas]

Excellent work on the tank, I love Evaporust.  I use it on my tanks and all old bits during rebuilds.
Stev-o, I usually swirl around a bit of Kerosene in my tanks to prevent flash rust from forming.  Just make sure and give it a good rinse before using again.

The chemical leaves a film on it. Just leave it. My CB160 tank still looks good.

More than likely I'll add a little, swish around then fill with fuel. Remember, it took six (6) gallons to clean this tank @ $24.00 per gallon. The first three was not worth saving. The next three is still usable. The tank was just awful so I expected a cost.

Like Greggo said, this is great stuff for cleaning chrome bolts, nuts and screws. Use this in place of everything now.

I forgot to mention I also did a vinegar soak.

Takes a while but worth it in the end. Steve, just fill up the tank and set it to the side for a couple months. Won't hurt a thing.
