so now that youve had the opportunity to ride both the 550 and the 750, which do you prefer and why?

Is this a trick question!?

Hahahaha you had to ask...

I haven't had much seat time on the 750 yet so my answers may change in time.

My first thoughts on the cb750 was that it felt incredibly lighter than I expected and smooth. I'm very pleased. The gsxr600 forks used have dampening and rebound adjustment that I'm still playing with but it's got enough range adjustment to find what's needed. The FOX shocks are really nice match and the bike doesn't feel too stiff.

The motor on the 750 is a lot smoother than the 550 and the vibration is less throughout the bike. The 750 has more power and it's noticeable.

The knee dents in the tank and foot peg position makes the cb750 more comfortable to ride.

Both a really nice to ride but I just have a personal bond with the cb550. If I had to sell one tomorrow it would be the 750 for no good reason.

There is no replacement for displacement unless you transplant a modern 550 engine into a CB550 frame like the Twineline Thorn bike. I WISH you could mod the 550 power plant to give you reliable long term power above 80 bhp. Then you would have the best of both worlds.

As it stands, my 836 CB750 is very smooth and has a still reliable motor with decent gusto. My 550 is stock and very lightweight, but buzzy at 75 mph and could use more torque. It's still a fun bike, but it could use more grunt than a big bore kit, porting, a cam and CR carbs will provide.

Just my $0.02!

Nice! You'd have finished in half the time had you not spent so much time texting and reading those pesky manuals  ;)

Now it's time for a thread in your 350!?!?!

That 350 looks cool.  It looks like a Ducati single-sided swingarm.  I was going to put a Monster S4 swingarm on my 750 at one point in time.

I'm interested in seeing the 350 come together, but wonder if that would have been better suited for a 750.

We disagree on that one, Don. I live the look of the massive drive line against the slim engine. Looks ultra-mean street machine! Bet it would be an absolute blast with a hot motor in it!

BTW, Devin, I recognized those manuals from the video. Laughed pretty hard. And I'd bet, some those texts you were reading were mine  :-\

The 350 is a pretty light frame to start with, and the engine can be modded to nearly double its stock power.  With that sort of power plant (small but potent), I'd be more excited. I'd just like to see some power to match that killer suspension.

That stance is absolutely badass.

Yes, by all means, strap a turbo on that 350 if you feel so inclined!  Or not.  My feeling as to my earlier comment was that with all of the "investment" in modern suspension, it might be more "worth" it to have a stronger powerplant.  That's not to say that someone with a Ninja 250 trackbike doesn't see dividends with an upgraded superbike suspension.

Maybe slap some 62mm pistons in there, a pair of 29s and a stage 3 MRieck head job. That'll wake 'er up!

Seriously, that sounds good. I've heard of people doubling stock power on their 350s but I'm not sure what kind of reliability that yields.

The 350 looks amazingly modern! as far as reliability if you double the output who cares it'll be a blast to ride for the short life it'll live! maybe beef up the sleeves? While your rebuilding the bike completely why don't you design a water cooled sleeve so the poor lump doesn't melt!

Great-looking bike either way love what you're doing with these vintage machines just don't cut up something pristine. 2cents
