Would you or your sons buy all the stupid clothes and dress up like the Village People ala your standard Harley rider?

I've got a Triumph Jacket Tim, I bought it one day when it was almost 40 degrees C in Melbourne. I'd taken my Rocket III in to get Dyno'd after I installed a new Jardine "Big Boss" pipe, Power Commander III and K&N filter. (141 BHP and 147 ft lbs of torque, at the rear wheel, woohoo!) I'd worn my leather jacket and probably lost 3 or 4 litres of fluid on the trip into the city, and wasn't looking forward to wearing it home.

I wasn't allowed in the workshop, so while the boys were playing with my bike I wandered around the showroom, and found the Triumph summer mesh jacket on special for 200 bucks.

It's very light, has CE armour on the elbows and back, lots of pockets, and the best thing is that when on the move, the air flows straight thru. I hate wearing a jacket on a hot day for obvious reasons, but this jacket is (almost) like not wearing one at all.

I wear it on my Triumph, my Honda's, my BMW and my Yamaha. If I had a Harley I'd wear it on my Harley too. After 40(+) years on bikes, my riding gear consists of a couple of helmets, few leather jackets, a couple of pairs of gloves, and my Triumph mesh jacket. I usually wear my lace up work boots, I'm not keen on "Motorcycle Only" boots, I find them to be pretty useless for walking around once I arrive at my destination. I remember walking around Phillip Island at Mick GDoohan's last GP (when he fell off in turn 1 and I went home) in a pair of Alpine Star's, and they were the most uncomfortable boots I'd ever worn. They went into the bin when I got home.

Would I buy a Harley jacket? Hell yeah, if it was well made, why not? I like the orange and brown color scheme on some Harley jackets, it looks good, and I'd be happy to wear it on any of my bikes. Would I wear a Harley bandanna? Nope, bandanna's (of any description) are gay. Would I wear Harley chaps? Nope, gay again, as are frilly jackets, leather vests, etc etc. What would my son's wear? Well they're both big blokes, very fit and they can both fight, so I guess they can wear what they want? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Wide Glides are nice Dwight, but I like Sporty's, and this one's my favourite. Ooh, and the rider might be a bit pretentious, he's wearing a Harley jacket (but no bandanna, thank God) and what's that bolted on the side, an oil cooler? WTF? ;D

My old Iron Head Sporty would do that all day Lester, folks that have only ridden modern SOHC4's don't realise how much torque big twins have. BHP = top end speed, but torque = wheelies! ;D

Of course, if I was gonna buy a bike that was made in India, I'd buy this one, the Royal Enfield Continental GT 535. Not very powerful, but an "Out of the box" Cafe Racer with links back to the 1940's? Soo-poib! ;D

I imagine the normal Harleys I see would fold up as soon as the front wheel hit the deck again.  ;D

They're pretty solid mate, did you see the pics of the turkey on the sports bike (R1? Not sure) that crashed into Jerry Griffin's Harley? It was a write off, whereas Jerry's Hog had a dent in the tank and the fairing broke when it fell over. I know what bike I'd rather be on....... ;D

All right, I'll throw my two cents in on this one. My opinion on the new 500 and 750 Harley Street: ABOUT F*CKING TIME Harley made something different!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If I were in the market for cruiser, I would seriously look at these machines (the 750). As an MSF Ridercoach, I will have a Harley that I can actually recommend for the first time! Quite frankly the 45 degree, Pushrod V-Twin is a dinosaur and the fact that they still exist in this day and age is ridiculous. My Ducati 750 V-Twin can take out any big bore Harley I can put it up against. These new engines that Harley are using can be compared to the old engines that they've run into the ground with one word: BETTER! A couple of years ago Harley almost went out of business. People had realized that the other manufacturers were building better bikes for cheaper prices and Harley finally caught on. The only thing that kept them alive was their merchandizing. The V-Rod was an Awesome step forward for the motor company. It's too bad it has taken them 12 YEARS to take another. The tortoise may have beat the hare in that great race, but at least they both ran. Harley has barely left the starting line. If Harley (PLEASE, GOD) continues in this direction, perhaps they will have a future in motorcycling and not just clothing and bumper stickers.

A friend of mine has an xr1200 and I have ridden it.  He has added a better than stock 2 into 1 pipe with a power commander to adjust fueling, Ohlins shocks, and some nicer rearsets.  It's fast(he manages high 11's in the quarter on it without figuring out how to really launch it hard), but I think you would have to try pretty hard to wheelie that thing like the guy in the youtube video.  Handling is very cb750 like (which I feel is poor for a modern bike)...very solid and stable and you really have to stomp it over to get it to lean, although it has tons more lean angle due to that narrow v-twin engine.  I think it is a really fun bike.  Thing is, Harley killed it off after a few years.  Why can't Harley keep building, and selling, something sports oriented?  These new 500/750s are just more cruisers...
If it works good, it looks good...

No, they just put a stunt man on the bike, anything with a clutch can do a wheelie. The trick is bringing it up like that on throttle alone. That pig won't do it.

Why can't Harley keep building, and selling, something sports oriented?

No doubt because they lose money on them whenever they try it.

Sounds like the CB400f, Honda quit making it because they cost as much to manufacture as a CB750 and they were being sold for little to no profit at all. So they did the smart business decision and killed it.

Ken736cc, and we ride "Rice Burners".  People always place unflattering names on things they either don't understand or don't like for some reason.  To the people that buy the new HD's they will probably meet or exceed their needs.  I imagine they will do well in a lot of markets where their size and price appeal to a lot of folks.  Not everyone can afford a $20,000+  toy/bar hopper/cruiser.

I don't know if that's necessarily an unflattering name mate, I think it's kinda cute. If a "Proper" Harley is a "Hog", then a baby Harley should be called a "Piglet", yeah? Cheers, Terry. ;D

I reckon it would be OK if Harley is after the "chick bike" market. As you know, a lot of guys won't ride a Sportster because it has been saddled with the chick bike thing.

Instead they ride a poor handling heavy piece of crap that is way over priced, their loss. If you choose your bike by what others will think of you, you are riding for the wrong reasons.

Powderman, if there were more Harley riders with that attitude, Harley would probably be able to sell some decent bikes!
