550 cam chain tensioner interchangeability
« on: January 16, 2014, 11:39:23 AM »
Howdy folks!  I'm amassing parts for a top end rebuild of my '77 550F.  Once I get everything together, I'll start a thread, post pics, etc...  But one of the main reasons for the rebuild (other than oil all over my boots) is that my cam chain tensioner is cannot be adjusted (very likely stripped).  I've seen the whole assemblies for sale on DSS, but they're definitely not cheap.  Considering going the ebay route, but just wanted to clarify things:

Are the tensioners from various 550 models all interchangeable.  For instance, could I use one from a '75 550k1 in my '77 F?  They look pretty identical, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask before I buy something.

Thanks!  You guys rule!

I had a problem with my tensioner as well. I removed it and found the teeth were out of line due to ham fistedness. A little persuasion with a hammer and it works fine now.
Get a look at your tensioner before you spend on it.

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I also reserrected my tensioner - had to bend the tabs out to dismantle it so I could straighten out the bent teeth, ran a die over the thread with the screwdriver slot in it, reassembled it and bent the tabs back down. I think the tabs will probably break off if I ever have to do this again though.. Can't hurt to try, good luck!
