stock cb550 exhaust and brake pedal issue.
« on: January 30, 2014, 03:52:15 PM »
Hey guys i'm stumped because i can't figure out why my brake pedal is hitting the 4th pipe after re-installation. Im 100% sure it wasn't hitting before i took it apart as i have riden it.
I've looked at the exploded diagram and I have used the right pipe for the right location (hard to get it confused as 3rd and 4th have a connecting tube) and have all the necessary parts.

I tried pushing the 4th pipe away from the brake pedal as i tighten the exhaust mount bolt. However, as i tighten the collar while my other hand still pushing the 4th pipe away, the pipe will adjust itself and move outwards causing it to sit right below the brake pedal when the outer nut is tightened.

When you reinstalled the brake pedal, did you use the alignment marks on the pedal and lever shaft to align everything? This would cause the pedal to sit kind of wonky if you didn't.

You need to readjust your brake adjuster by the rear wheel hub

You can have it mounted either side of frame is fine

I tried that but theres a significant gap (1inch))

Theres no way itd work like that. + the peg has to stay in the outside. If the mount is placed in the inside the the foot peg bracket would clamp onto the exhaust backet. I don't know if that makes sense but i can take a pic if needed.
Do you have the exhaust brackets upside down or reversed?
They can only be one way because the exhaust clamp at the very end only aligns at this setup.
You need to readjust your brake adjuster by the rear wheel hub
How does that affect the horizontal motion of the pedal? I have the rear properly set up iirc

I'm guessing you had your rear wheel off before this issue?  Your brake shoes may be worn, or the arm that attaches to the spline on the hub is not set to correct position.  Try playing with position of that arm that attaches to the spline.

Brake shoes are still good. I took pictures and have followed the exploded diagram as a guide for installation. From my pictures it was installed right.

I just rechecked and seems to be done correctly.

I still dont understand how having the rear wheel off affects the position of the brake pedal if it's range of motion is strictly vertical.

Its as if the brake pedal needs to be offset more to the outter side but this will cause it to not bite on the teeth thingy.

In your video I see you have it at a point where it doesn't hit. Why not tighten the header at that spot?

Yea i know what you mean but even if you tighten the header and while holding the position, it will gradually revert back to the point where it will hit as the outter screw is tightened. If i dont tighten the screw, the pipe will be lose. Which from my what i recall prior to disassembly, wasnt loose.

Has the rear mounting bracket moved a bit? I would try tightening it in the no-hit position and applying some pressure to the rear pipe at the mounting. It seems odd.  :-\

yes, try loosening all three exhaust bracket nuts/bolt first and then with them quite loose repeat what you've been trying again?

yes ive tried something similar. But the main issue is that if its not tightened(loose) it wont hit but if i go over pot holes, it will revert back. Hence why i know that it should be tight.

There must be something im not doing right.

I appreciate the time guys.

No-hit. You have the header in a position where the brake does not foul. Tighten it up there. Then move to the rear bracket. Apply pressure when it's loose and tighten that.

might be a good idea to first pull the offending pipe back off again and check there's nothing stopping it from seating squarely against the head like a deformed copper gasket or something?

Have the brackets been off the exhausts for some reason? trying to find out whether there's a possibility that the wrong bracket has been fitted, if they haven't been off then it's clearly a mispositioning issue.

From the pic, your pedal still seems to be sitting too low; the shaft should nearly touch the foot peg mounting nut just above it and the foot pad on the pedal should sit just below the footrest. Can we get a more face-on pic to see just where everything is oriented? compare your pic to the one I posted above. I'm wondering whether it's the wrong pedal, or maybe it's been damaged somehow... Also, brake pedal travel in the video is quite excessive - the pedal should move only a half inch or so...

There are some points which may be wrong. Just watched the vid and the others are right, brake pedal travel is excessive. I'm not 100% sure but the spline and dot thing on the pedal don't seem to line up, may be one spline out. However even aligning them won't make any difference as all it would do would be to move the brake arm forward but won't move the brake pedal up. However moving the brake arm forward would reduce the amount of travel in the brake action.
The brake pedal adjusting bolt is interesting, in the manual it shows the bolt being fitted the other way, the head is uppermost with the end of the bolt touching the brake pedal, the locknut is against the frame lug. In the parts book it shows it the way you have it. Not sure if that would raise the pedal up a bit, it's mainly there so you can position the pedal to suit your riding position.

SohRons pic doesn't even show the adjusting bolt, unless his bolt is black and is lost against the frame black. That would raise his brake pedal up to it's maximum position which would be misleading. Or maybe the pic isn't clear enough but considering how clean his build is I'd have expected a new bolt which should show against the black frame.

OOps!   ::)   Didn't notice that, but here's another pic that shows the stop nut. I've seen it installed both ways, with the bolt head on top and on the bottom, so I guess Honda isn't quite sure how it goes. Anyway, the pic still shows a higher orientation of the pedal...

Aaah but yours is fitted the other way SohRon, maybe that way allows the arm to sit a little higher. Personally I think it should be the way you have it fitted, reason being is that if the bolt locknut slips the worst that can happen is the bolt unwinds and falls out, If however it's fitted the other way it could unwind downwards due to gravity, so every time you press the brake pedal slips a little lower, you then end up with a possibility of the rear brake being on slightly without you knowing. The 500/550 rear brake drum is already known as being poor, cracking etc. Anything that has the chance of causing massive heat buildup should be avoided IMO.

Just noticed something else about your pics SohRon. Sorry for the thread hijack here BTW Jimsum. Your rear wheel spindle is fitted the wrong way round. The nut should be on the same side as the brake drum, yours has the nut on the sprocket side by the look of it. You may say that it doesn't really matter and in some respect you'd be right. However if you ever need to stand on the brake nut spanner in the tool kit to undo the wheel in the event of a puncture, your kinda buggered if it's on the left of the frame as it would unwind counterclockwise and that would put the spanner inside the exhaust system where you couldn't stand on it. It's a nothing but knowing how particular you are in getting it 100% correct I thought I'd point that out.

All of the CB550s I've seen have it installed from the brake plate side; it's how it's shown in the manual, so that's how I've installed it. Other bikes are different, I guess!

You may well be right, maybe I changed mine early on due to not having the space to stand on the spanner to undo the nut. It doesn't matter either way as the spindle doesn't need to come out to remove the rear wheel due to the quick release system used on the 500/550K. Nothing worse than not being able to undo the rear spindle when your on a ride and need to fix a puncture, even had a mate who used a scaffolding pole just for extra leverage his spindle nut was so tight.

I agree that it probably doesn't really matter, and I think you have a valid point re: wheel removal, but I have to go by the book, and this is how it's oriented there. Thanks for the tip!

Have the brackets been off the exhausts for some reason? trying to find out whether there's a possibility that the wrong bracket has been fitted, if they haven't been off then it's clearly a mispositioning issue.
I cleaned the pipes and marked the bracket. I never worked on both bracket at once to avoid confusion.
are you sure you have the correct brake pedal?
I never took my brake pedaliff the bike. The only thing that came off was
Both wheel
Fork
Tank
Seat
Fenders
Handle bar
Pipes

might be a good idea to first pull the offending pipe back off again and check there's nothing stopping it from seating squarely against the head like a deformed copper gasket or something?
Thanks. I did this already. I cleaned those first.

Here is the video.

Even if i tightened the adjusting nut, it will still hit the pipe. I have it adjusted at a point where the rear wheel isn't dragging

Pull your rear wheel back, readjust the chain, that should solve your issue

All of the CB550s I've seen have it installed from the brake plate side; it's how it's shown in the manual, so that's how I've installed it. Other bikes are different, I guess!

F models are installed with the nut on the brake side due to being a closed swinging arm and the 4-1 exhaust.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.
