So Jerry (Rxman) has talked $2 Bill (bentonracing) into travelling to the Bonneville Salt Flats this August. Joe (joesmotos) & Dennis (Old Scrambler) have bikes to compete for records. A few other members of this forum have been to the salt-flats (2 or 3 on CB750s) and more are sure to join in the fun.......Frank (754) are you listening? 

The motorcycle event is known as the BUB SPEED TRIALS, an AMA and FIM sanctioned event for landspeed records. Some riders run in the Run What You Brung (RWYB) category but most try for class records. In 2013 a new category of records was opened......CLASSIC........for bikes made in 1956 through 1980, in motor sizes of 350; 500; 750; and 1,000cc.

I suggest anyone that is interested to read up on the event at landracing.com or bubspeedtrials.com

We are also following Johno in Australia as he is now running at lake Gardinaire (SP) and can be tracked under the 'Salt Racer CB750 Oz-Style' page on this forum.

SAM or JERRY..........you may want to move several of the posts under Bill's Stroker Build to this thread.

I will start my own build thread in a few weeks when I begin the final assembly of my CB750A chassis and hopefully a high-performance K motor with an F2 head.  Most of my real experience in building is watching or holding wrenches for Dave Murre, my good friend and life-long motor-head.  A huge amount of information has been gleaned from the numerous experts on this board. 

Post your travel plans here so we can coordinate at the Salt.  We are always in need of crew-members, photo and video help, and someone to be in charge of fun 8) 8) 8) 8). If we know in advance, I can get extra discounted tickets for multi-day attendees.  Besides the interest in our specific bikes, you will get a chance to some of the most exotic motorcycle builds in the world.......and that includes the women riders ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Bill.........I'm still debating the CB900 rods vs standard CB750 rods to use with those J&E pistons........I may have piston to valve clearance for the CB900 rods in the F2 head if I use the right cam.  BTW...one of the extra piston sets you sent have some serious seize-marks on the skirts......but they look good on the shelf :D :D :D

Another forum-member is Zac (grasscutter)  from Omaha. He was a helper last year and was all excited about building a CX500 for Bonneville.  I expect to soon hear from him.

Let us know how you plan to travel. August 23rd (Saturday) is pit-setup and tech-day. Rider meeting is Sunday AM........and then we go to the starting line 8) 8) 8) 8)

I wondered how long it would take till a new thread was started over this Bonneville stuff,ha ha..sorry i butted in on Bills build thread...reckon we will have to start a Kickstarter campaign to get flight money for Sam so he can shoot it out with Bill..

I have a big Pirate flag to fly over our pit area,reckon we will need a British flag also,Colorado,Ga.and whatever other states join in..wonder how fast a F4 would go anyway?It is Bonneville so i know it wont be sea level..

Cheating is allowed,race gas ok,no rules cept the AMA stuff..ha ha

Bill,the bike will be there amigo,wired up and ready to go thru tech...I have safety wire pliers and i aint afraid to use em..

Guess i will start shopping for a BIG EZ UP canopy...

Yeh you ain't...should have safety wired that 82 mm carb that your FT500/700cc Honda spit out when it backfired at Road Atlanta! ;D just teasing, Joe won the Championship that day....after z carb was put back in! 8) Fun Times!!
I think I have gearing and maybe other parts....Carabelli raced a 600 for a while! ;D

It'll be ANOTHER show of force like Valdosta and Bradenton.

Bill, all we gotta do is figure out how and when to get you here. When you get looking let me know and we can hammer out the details. Side trips for your other needs. I'm hoping for a shotgun rider in the Vette  ;D Since you're not pulling a bike you could fly here or Denver and I'll come get you. Better, cheaper and quicker than a 3000 mile round trip in your truck to CO. Couple changes of clothes and your equipment and we're set.

As Joe mentioned previously the Salt Lake airport is on the way for anyone that wants to fly in also. Couple hours to the Salt. That's the closest.

I stayed at the Motel 6 in Wendover, UT. Weekday rates Sun-Th were $35 and it's definitely NOT the dive I anticipated. Dennis has the restaurants scoped out. Cheap eats too! And then there's the casinos just across the line on the other side of Wendover.  :D

This is a fun week and you only race yourself.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Wow, another new venture to watch unfold. I looked at the website with the faqs, overview and rules. Seems like a lot of fun for you guys. Please post a lot of pictures and videos for those of us at home. Oh, and leave the salt behind when you come home- that stuff seems like its nasty even on a pair of shoes.

The MotoGp and NHDRO events here in Indy are a couple weeks earlier this year and on the very remote possibility I would like to entertain the idea of making this deal.

I have looked at the rules, I am a bit unclear as to what to make of them. Can a person run any 750 (750 class) up to and including a 79, and what mods are allowed?

TurboD..............Basics.............3 Overriding Classes for each motor size category:  Vintage = Pre '56; Classic = '56 - '80; All else including above production years.

Then divide each class into Production = showroom with listed exceptions

Modified = Basic motor & frame with seat above rear rim........usually heavily modified but limited to a 10% wheelbase extension from stock.

Altered = Special Construction frame and moded motor....usually a low seat but an aftermarket roadracing frame puts you in the A-Class.

Each class can be further divided for Partial Streamlining and induced induction, as well as gas vs fuel.  Further classes are for sidecar rigs; streamliners; diesel; and electric.

I've been somewhat involved for 5-years and am far from an expert. You can run almost anything in Run-What-You-Brung as long as the bike and the rider-gear pass tech for safety.  I concentrate on the Modified classes with records in 250cc pushrod gas - naked and partial streamlined.  Shortened to: 250cc M-PG & MPS-PG.

You could enter a CB750 in the 750cc classes but would be up against GSXR 2-stroke records. In Classic you are allowed a 0.050-inch overbore from stock to stay in the same size category. In Classic, If the stock bore is over 750cc you are automatically in the 1,000cc category. If you qualify for a record they measure your motor to verify size, then they will listen to any challenges from other riders before certifying the record. AMA and FIM are somewhat different and have separate fees.

Thanks for the pic, Jerry 8)  That's Drew Gatewood, the head tech, measuring my Tiger Cub motor. Your usually smiling whenever you hear the words "go to impound" ;D ;D ;D  And of course, you have to supply the wrenches and labor to tear-down the motor. The shade was borrowed from the tech-staff.  If you qualify for a record, someone from your team needs to direct you to the impound area. You lose the qualification if you stopped at your pit area before arriving at impound. Most in attendance listen to the FM-radio broadcast to hear what is going on for both courses. 

BTW..........2014 is expected to be an exceptional year when the top streamliners will be trying to top 400 mph. At those speeds a motorcycle tire will usually shred or come off of the rim.  Sam Wheeler has developed a solid alloy wheel with a tire tread etched into the outer edge.  Others use car wheels/tires and a few have used aircraft units.

GSXR's were not produced until 86, so they should not qualify for classic. Correct?

Let me kinda ask my question directly. If I was interested in running a 79 or older 750 in the "stock" or "production" or "showroom" what ever the correct term of the class might be, What mods would be allowed? Engine wise?

I don't know the exact year for GSXRs but I think the 4-valve GSX models were in Canada and Europe before the US. This is an international competition. Think about the modern HONDA 250cc / 4-cylinder at 17,000 rpms 8)

In the Production class, the outward appearance of the bike must have all 'stock' parts. They don't have to be restored or NOS, but original parts to that model. The turn signals, tail-light / license bracket, rear foot-pegs, and mirrors should  be removed. The headlamp can be taped. The bars can be exchanged for lower units but must be mounted in the standard clamps.  Sprockets can be changed and tires need to be modern production in similar sizes.

Internal motor parts can be modified and in some cases the baffles can be removed from the exhaust. But otherwise a Production Class bike must use the correct carbs and airbox.

I have given Production some thought and would consider an F-model with the 4-1 exhaust.  No more than the 2nd-over piston size could be used to stay at or under 750cc. With the 1980 cut-off date, you may have a decent shot at holding a record for more than a few days.

I have been going to Bonneville for the last 7 years so if you need a list of things to bring let me know. Old scrambler how long have you been going to Bonneville? I will have to come and say hi this year.

Couple of things.............TurboD.........in Production Classic you could use a 1mm overbore and be legal.

195.........I'll look to see you. I was a spectator in 2009. Returned to compete in 2011 & 2013. Hotel rooms have different rates because of weekend gambling. Example: the older rooms (2-queens) at the Peppermill are $99 on Friday, $119 on Saturday.......but only $49 on other days. I think I will be at the Motel 6 this year........its Jerry's favorite ;) Camping is available on the salt at the 'bend in the road' and on the eastern edge of Wendover at the proposed museum site.

Thanks Scrambler. I think if I were to give it a go, I would pick up a 79 and use the better head to make more power.
