Fork disassembly

Good morning all!! So this morning I decided to wake up early and take apart/rebuild the forks on my 75 750, then get them ready to be mounted back on the bike.  Upon removal of the headlight ears I noticed that the chrome was rusted off and quite unsightly. I'm not going to be using the original ears and the replacements I have don't cover up this area. So my question is, can this section just be painted??? It's well above the travel of the suspension, and the lower part is in good shape.  Or is it necessary to replace the tubes??? Thanks again!!!

I painted those as a temporary solution between upper and lower bracket.

You could treat and paint this part of the fork tubes.  Just make sure there is no pitting in the travel area as doesn't take much to chew up fork seals.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too, where the travel area is it actually looks perfect. I'm doing a cafe build too so it doesn't have to be 100% correct!!! Thanks guys for the quick response!! I'll be sure to post some before and after shots! -Dan

What kind of 'treatment' would be required before painting the upper part of the fork tubes? I'm asking because the same thought had occurred to me recently.

I sand blasted my upper portions with the rest of them heavily masked off and I'm just gonna have them primed and painted

I would eliminate the rust by sanding it, blasting it or chemically neutralizing it, and then seal/paint over the affected area.
