I have a bag of genuine Honda steel balls if your stuck for one. Postage from the UK might make it expensive though.

Thanks for the offer but it was in there. Took a good amount of degreaser to get it out. I've got the whole cover soaking in it now to try and clean it up some.

Got a little bit of work done on the bike today. I took off the chain and the front sprocket to clean out some of the grease and oil that was caked under the left side cover. I think it must have been leaking some pretty serious oil under there, I'll have to order up some new seals. I'm trying to keep a list of oem parts I need to pick up so i can grab a bunch all at once since bikebandit and partzilla rape you on shipping.

I took the clutch cover off to get to my broken lifter rod. I undid the 4 bolts on the clutch basket but didn't have any spring clip pliers at home to get the clutch out so that'll have to wait till later this week. Luckily my dad has pretty much every tool I ever need so he's gonna let me borrow a pair. He lent me his electric impact screwdriver today which made taking the clutch off a breeze. I had to whack at my harbor freight impact driver with a hammer a million times to undo the left side cover.

I got a lot of polishing done over the past couple days, it's not perfect and could probably use a little more on a few pieces but it's way better than what it was.







I should be pulling the motor soon then finally getting down to a bare frame.

Also, I wanted to ask, how do you get the rear inner fender off the bike? Do you have to bend the tabs? I didn't want to end up snapping anything so I wanted to leave it alone until I could ask on here. Gonna try and do some more work tomorrow.

Ok, so I have the old clutch lifter rod out and got the new one in the mail.

What should I lube this up with before putting it back in? Oil or grease? The broken one just seemed to have oil on it.

Yo! I can't get my carb unit to release off the intakes!! I'm a 66 y o "newbie" that made it #1 on my bucket list to ride again (not since '70's)!! I got everything loose and the unit is off the airbox np but, the intake side gives/moves but won't release! Am I missing something (entirely possible). Thnx & good luck with your's. BTW, mine's a '72 cb500K1 Four "barn find" not reg. since the '80's. Later, Paul. ;-)

Hey Paul, it's never too late to start! Is your airbox all the way out or just disconnected? Taking it out will give you some room to work the carbs off. You can try taking a heat gun to the carb boots to try to get them to flex more. Just keep rocking the carbs up and down while pulling back and they should give way. Good luck with yours and get a build thread going, there's loads of knowledge to be gotten from everyone here.

Thnx, man. I'm in WAY over my head and the 2 differant owner's manuals are next to NO help! They ASSUME you , the user/reader, have a working knowledge & omit things that are important, like disconnecting 2 lines UNDER the carb unit to remove it (I found them by sheer luck). I made an internet bud who's 61 & been a  bike-builder since 18 from Pittsburgh but he only goes online 1 time weekly! Anyway, he suggests finding/using a piece of wood to wedge between the intake & boots and litely tap with a hammer while jiggling (am I an octopus?). I got a very small amount of tools and a TORCH OR HEAT LAMP AIN'T IN MY INVENTORY (MAYBE A HAIRDRYER ON HIGH SETTING?). Sorry, just realized "caps lock" was on.  Oh, btw, I don't have a "smart phone" or digital cam for pics either.  SS $ only goes just so far. Weather permitting, I'll try again tomorrow (took today to recuperate my sore as hell old frame)  Thnx for the encouragement & tip(s). Later, Paul. ;-)

Hey guys, just checking in to let you know I'm still here. I know I haven't posted in a while but I am still chugging along, slowly but surely. Time and money is a little tight, but I'm doing what I can. I swear I've been working on it, here's proof.






Also managed to track down an extra brake caliper and mount for my dual disk set up.

Finally got around to drilling out my rotors. I've been putting off painting everything because I want to do the inside of the rotors with the same Spraxmax 2k paint as the frame. Once the can is activated you only have a 12 hour window before it's trashed, so I want to get everything in one shot.

I've got to chamfer the holes still but the hard part's done. After that I can prime it and, weather permitting, paint it this weekend.

Radam - Get a thread going and maybe we can help each other along the way. This bike pretty much needed to be stripped down all the way to nothing and built back up. The pictures make it looks a lot better than it was. I'm pretty much only using the frame and the engine. Everything else is basically being replaced with CB500/CB550 parts I've been picking up either on here or on Craigslist/eBay.

2strokeTrush - I've been following your threads, yours was way cleaner than mine, shame the clutch was screwed up. Hope you can sort that out or use one of your new 550's in it's place.

Yeah it was clean, that what made me even more pissed when the Clutch went to Hell....I pick the new 550's up hopefully Tuesday so we will see what happens from there!  Looking good my friend!  ;D

Frame and other small parts are painted! I underestimated how much paint I needed and ended up running out midway through painting :o Oh, well. I had to order more paint and it finally came yesterday. Here's everything all finished.



 
My next step is the engine. I've been scrubbing grime off of it all day today. It's getting pretty clean but it'll have to be spotless for painting, so I've still got work to do. I've also got new gaskets, oil seals and stainless hardware to go with it. Not sure how deep I'm going into the motor so I probably won't use everything in the gasket set. I ran into a SNAFU trying to take the cylinder head cover off though. I removed the breather cover, the two small side covers, the tappet covers, and all the bolts and screws. As soon as the tension was released the front separated from the head but the back side won't lift. From the diagrams it looks like there are two dowels holding it in place. Any tricks on separating the cover from the head? I put some pb blaster in where the dowels are and now I'm just waiting for it to soak in.

Just what you're doing to part the seas... You can also use wood shims to help coax them apart, insert, tap, move shim towards stuck area, repeat. Don't force anything, it'll let go if you're gentle but persistent.

Thanks for the tip, cal. I took a break from it yesterday after I got stuck, I'm gonna try and get back at it today to see if I can pull it off.

Jaguar, the finned covers were pretty beat up. Both have bottom fins broken off, the points cover had an big hole covered by a washer to keep it in place, and a chunk came out of the stator cover when i took it off the bike. I got a stock points cover off ebay and I'm working on tracking down one for the stator. I'm cleaning up the tappet covers and using them for now since they're in good shape but I might replace them with stock ones eventually, just because I like the look better.
