Just for clarification, you did release all the tension on the tappets themselves correct?

How do you that, turning the advancer? This is all the Honda manual says

If that means that you did not because it's not listed in the procedure, then I understand. But, to avoid bending a valve, release all tension on the valves. This too could be preventing the cover from releasing as it's tweaked against a cam lobe.

I burned out a couple dremel wire brushes and got rid of all the chipping paint and oxidation on the cover, I stayed away from anywhere that will have a seal.

Parts keep coming in!
I got these from fellow member, Chaser60, last week

These came in yesterday, unfortunately the tubes and rim strips won't be in until next week.

And all the way from Germany, this came today.

Engine sneak peek! Still have to polish the fin edges and put everything back on. Should look sweet with all the polished aluminum pieces and new stainless hardware.

The downside to polishing is that once you do one piece really good, you have to give every other piece the same treatment.

OTP lacquer your polished alloy with the POR15 clear, it'll keep it shiny and you'll never have to polish it again  - guaranteed not to yellow or crack.

I PM'd Tews because, like Steve-o, I'm not sure what he means by the plate.

Mick, thanks for the tip on the aluminum, I'll look into it. It would be a a shame to do all that polishing for nothing.

Sanded my fins and mocked things up. I have to swap in some fresh gaskets and go grab some anti-seize for my stainless bolts tomorrow so i can wrap things up on this and get it back in the frame. I think after this I'm going to start work on the tank and side covers while it's still warm enough for paint.

What do you think?

Look'n good OTP, looks way better than all black, it really highlights the head, the fins, breather and tappet caps.

Thanks Mick! I wanted to do something different since my 750 engine is the stock aluminum color. Straight black on it's own I thought would be too dull, though. This low gloss black with the polished aluminum really pops out at you though. I'm really happy with how it came out.

OTP I reckon you aught to sand the fins on the barrels also, it'll be even better. If you don't like it - just re spray them
