$%^# cell phones
« on: August 26, 2014, 03:27:00 PM »
Rode the 750K6 to work and the way home I hit reserve and stopped and filled her up. Leaving the station I was sitting at the light in the turning lane waiting to make a left turn. Getting the green arrow I took off going left and noticed a car across the intersection in the right lane coming up to the light witch would be red since I had the green arrow in the turn lane. This car ran the red light and came all the way over on me in the left lane. I had to back off the throttle and hit the brakes to keep from getting hit and the whole time the driver had her cell phone stuck in her ear and running her chops and never saw me >:(

You can ride with me any time sir. You were watching. Ultimately you did the right thing and were not hurt. It's SOOOO hard to not retaliate sometimes >:(
Too bad there's not an ap for finding out her cell number.

For real,  Glad you didn't get hurt Dhall.

I was riding down 40 the other weekend towards charlotte and had a #$%* cross halfway in my lane doing the same thing.  I tried to make it a point to stay positioned by their driver's side mirror as I was riding fast lane to avoid a blind spot but she was oblivious.

A few weeks ago I bought my very first cell phone figuring it would help with meeting folks on the relay rally.  Just a cheap pay as you go model that served its purpose well, but now that is over for this year, I had little use for it.  So saturday night, after several tall Mint Juleps, I greatly enjoyed chucking it into the middle of a busy road and watching it die.

I'll spare everyone the rant, but I see this multiple times a day.  Not to mention the texting.  It is getting ridiculous.

We have strict laws and big fines here for talking and texting whilst driving but every time i go out there are plenty of people still doing it, morons only wake up when they kill someone, unless of course they kill themselves as well...

Really cell phones are the latest & greatest distraction. The issue truly is distracted driving, whether it be cell, eating, the radio or passenger interaction, we've all been guilty. I watch truckers weaving out of their lane, asleep or on cell, I don't know, guys & gals yapping at the kids in the back seat, reading some papers, doing personal grooming, enough already!  As said before, ride like you are invisible or everyone is out to kill you, both are similar.  We must have far higher standards for driving exams, & periodic testing, none of this licence for life crap after a 10 minute test.  As like most of us, I would not like it but would welcome retests, might keep us sharper, if we don't change the system, the carnage will continue.  Rant over..

Test and license are just papers, don't mean jack.  If you put "do not use cell phone" on the license, people still gonna do it.  I started driving and riding may be 5 years before I got my license, and that made me a better driver. Not the license

I've often had that thought mate, instead of sitting on bloody road side radars collecting revenue they would do far better patrolling the roads and doing something for the community they are supposed to protect and serve, not be a revenue raising arm of the friggin Government. Throw GPS units into the fray as well, I saw a car in 2 lanes of traffic driving like a dodgem car, i was convinced the driver was drunk, as I passed it became obvious the 2 women in the car had no idea where they were and were both leaning into the middle of the car to read the wind screen mounted GPS, unbelievable.... :o

I like this idea about retesting or defensive driving courses. I also think they should design cell phones to give a strong electrical shock to the user if they are behind the wheel of a vehicle.  Anything to 'wake'em Up'   :o 8)

It's all Al Gore's fault; after all, he invented the internet!  ;)

A big reason I've raised my boys to ride and have them ride at an early age is to prevent them from talking/texting while driving. Can't do it on a motorcycle.

Here in the states, almost impossible to buy a 2-door, standard transmission car any longer. Should be a restricted license for all new drivers to be required to drive a front wheel, 5/6 speed with only 2 doors. This will require them to use both hands to drive, learn to handle a car better, and restrict how many friends are in the back (although here in VA new drivers do have personnel restrictions on non-family members and hours they can drive). Won't stop it all, but surely would help.

I can see legislation coming where a cell phone is disabled for certain functions unless it's blue-toothed to the car, and using the phone's own gyro, disables texting/apps that don't contribute to driving aide (non GPS features).

Cal,
I like the idea of the cell phone being disabled while behind the wheel in a running vehicle, people just won't stop using them irresponsibly unless something proactive is done to help;inattention while behind the wheel is a Killer.

I'm the worst hypocrite of all though as I use mine constantly. But, I've never been in accident, caused an accident, or even run anyone off the road (intentionally  ;)).

I think it comes from decades of riding experience that has made me very aware of the road and traffic, causing me to use safe judgement about where/when it's safe to use. At least that's the lies I tell myself.

It's not the mechanics of operating cell phone, the worst part is the attention split.  I had to brake hard for mom in minivan dealing with her child just the same as moron on the cell phone.

What bothers me is sitting in a line of traffic at a green light knowing that the person at the front of the line is texting away without consideration of all the gasoline being burned or time he costs people that get caught by the next red light.

I always enjoy it when I am behind an oblivious one holding up traffic at a green light. So I'll give a nice discreet beep on the horn to wake the individual up in the hopes I can get through the light before it changes. Of course the chosen one takes umbrage that I should interrupt them while they peck out their epic on their smarter-than-them phone and flips me off. I always smile, taking delight in observing yet another example of the petulant behavior of the self absorbed and entitled. Makes my day, really.

I've always wished that someone would just give them a tiny little 'love tap' to get'em going again w/o calling a policeman.
