Front Brake Loud Squeal with OEM Pucks
« on: August 08, 2014, 09:51:24 AM »
As the title states, my front brake squeal is almost unbearable. To the point where I don't even want to take the bike out. I have searched past topics and I have hondaman's book, and tried the majority of the tricks, cutting the lines into the pucks, and taking steel wool to the disc. It got really noticeable after I changed my rotor to a drilled rotor

I am open for any advice or other tricks that anyone has

Thank you
Tony

What are those Clevis pins on the pads? Have you modified them? The pads should just have cut outs to locate in the roll pins attached to the calliper body.

the clevis pin was attached to the pad, on my caliper it protrudes the the bake side and a cotter pin goes thru that hole
here is an old picture of it.

these are the best pictures that I have of it at the moment. what style are you talking about?

What model is your bike? I have a 550F and they don't have that style of pads.

Went through that not long ago. Tried all the suggestions on this site. Nothing worked. My last attempt was to spread a thin layer of CRC Brake Quiet on both sides of the nylon/plastic ring that sits between the piston and the brake pad. Brake has been quiet ever since. That was 500 miles ago. Not sure if your caliper has that ring or not but a little bit of the CRC between the piston and the pad might be worth a try.

I take it you have a 750K. If so what Stoli said.

Brake Quiet worked for me as well.  Also, I run a towel with rubbing alcohol along the rotor.  It works for a short period of time and cleans off any grime and dust that aides in squealing.  I have a 550

One part that gets over looked is the caliper arm. It needs to move smoothly.

Pop it off the bike and mess with it. If you can't take it apart by hand (it should be that free) then you need to take it apart and clean. I had to burn my pivot arm out to clean up and grease. The arm uses and o-ring top and bottom to keep water out and trap grease in

I know that my arm is clean and moves freely, I have to do some running around tomorrow so I'm going to pick up some brake quiet and give it a shot. off the top of my head I cant remember if I have that ring or not. But I will keep you all posted on the outcome (hopefully on Sunday)

simple,a small amount of silicone sealant around the pads and sort of glue them in,itll stop the vibrating but still allow the moving pad to move with the piston.

+1 I use corning silicone behind the pad. Apply once a year works for me on my CB750 K4 and K2

I used a thick spot of copper paste on the rear side of brake pads. I had to grind the pads all around to make them seat easy.
The thick powder coating was way too thick. Grinded all that stuff and pads were OK and can move slightly, no sticking brakes.

I did not attach the plastic ring to be seated under the pad on piston side. Could not mount it when ring took too much space. I have never used that back in the days either with Vesrah pads.

Copper grease, copper grease, copper grease! Followed the advice on copper grease from others here, did it last week and not another squeal since. Amazing! Making for such a more enjoyable and less embarrassing ride.
I packed it on the back of the brake pad and over the nylon washer, cheap and it works. How long it lasts before replacement, I don't know, but quick to do and I got a tub of it, so no probs.
Such a simple thing, but the blokes here know all the tricks, that's why this is such a great site, a lifesaver!

You're most likely going to have to order to that corning's.  I found some on ebay, and a little goes a long way.  After I completely rebuilt my front brake (new MC, SS lines, new piston, seal, etc etc etc), it didn't squeak for a few months.  It rains a lot here and I ride year around.  Eventually it started squealing.  The faster I was going, the worse the squeal (when brake applied).  I tried everything without much luck.

I noticed that in your first pic you are holding two different types of brake pads.  The all black pads that you cut into don't have the 45 degree angle cut into the outside edges.  I eventually went back to the pads in the left side of your photo with the edges filed to 45 degrees (corning's on necessary parts, and brake quiet on the back of the pads), and I haven't heard a squeak/squeal all summer.

Good luck!

YEs, high vacuum silicone. Other types, most of what the car guys have, is petro based and will wick itself onto the pad surface. NG.

I have a lifetime+ supply also.   :(

This is it, got mine for much less on Amazon.

FWIW - I use the Corning High Vac grease in all the areas recommended by Honda and also tried it behind the pads (where you would put copper grease or CRC). It does a great job at keeping the dust and dirt out of the caliper but didn't do anything to prevent the squeal. The brakes were quiet for about 10 minutes then came back louder than ever.

Obviously, one thing that you learn from all the posts on this subject is that there are a myriad of reasons why your brakes might be squealing and what works for some might not work for others.

Quick update.

I took the brakes off, cleaned everything and applied some CRC brake quiet (the spray can type) waiting the 30 min and assembled everything. I started off at 266 miles and now I am at 432 with out  a single squeal or noise! Thank you guys for all the help !
