My first build, 1974 cb350f

Hello everyone, I have wanted to do a Cafe build for a while now but just couldn't pull the trigger on anything until last week.  I saw a guy selling a 74' Cb350f in a box with a spare motor. So I went about 30 min away to look at it and couldn't leave without it.

Here it is.  I sat the seat and tank on just to get a look at it. (excuse the mess, I just moved to this location.)



So I started to take the spare motor apart tonight.  It appears either this motor went through a rebuild at some point or just doesn't have a whole lot of miles on it.

Everything up top seems to be very clean even with some fresh oil still on it.










The chambers do have a good bit a carbon buildup on them.










No lip at all on the top of the wall. just a minor bit of carbon. 




If anyone had any good places to get oem gaskets (if they still offer them) and also the Orings for the oil pump that would be great. It appeared that there might have been a leak in the bottom left corner.

Looks like someone had a little trouble getting these off at some point.




Nice little rats nest.


Anyone have any ideas besides the oil pan or pump leaking to have all this buildup in here?


Something else I noticed is the bolt and shaft going into this sensor actually has some play to it with the bolt tight. (no it is not the eyelet moving the entire shaft moves)


Is this bad to have this rust?




Very clean under this cover.


Should this be wet with oil residue or no? If no can i just use a brake cleaner type of spray to get it off? They are all in spec so they should be good to reuse.
 



Not happy with the splines on the kick starter but other than that everything else looks good.




And lastly very clean under the cover for the points. I am on the fence of going with a Dynatek Ignition.

If anyone can give me advice on where to get a gasket kit, and all new oil seals and Orings? hondaparts-direct.com? Bikebandit.com?

That frame that has already been cut was just a bonus that came with the purchase, it doesn't have paperwork or anything.  I'm sure I'll just hold onto it while I build the good frame.  If you meant the good frame, I just plan to clean it up and remove the unused tabs and things like that.  Will probably do a rear hoop with a kick up and a brat style seat.

Hey man that engine looks like its got some wear, but all in all good, clutch looks great.  First off have you read through a few of the 350F build threads on here>  Not the most popular bike on here, but some of us love them!

Also do a search for MATT350F he has a good thread as well.

1.  Buy a few cans of degreaser.   

2. Replace those screws with stripped out and messed with heads. No questions asked ;D

3.  Your Oil Pump Area very well may have a leak but remember the bike is 40 years old, They all seem to have buildup there.

4. That bolt looks to be your oil pressure sending unit, when your oil gets low that triggers the oil light on your dash, as long as its not leaking I would imagine its ok, my was leaking and I replaced it 2k miles ago.

5. Your stator is bad with all that rust yes,  But in order to charge your battery properly I would hit that sucker with some Wd40 and 000 steel wool. Get that thing clean.

6. Your clutch cover still has bits of gaskets on the rim, if they are stuck to it don't use a razor blade to remove it, You can actually cut into the metal forming a slit and then a leak.....ask me how I Know......

7.  Yes your clutch basket sits in the oil you put in the engine so it should be wet. 

8.  Your drive sprocket looks a little worn, Keep a eye on that and consider replacing it.  Dont wanna throw a chain through those nice covers. 

Looks like a good start and a great candidate for a cafe!  Keep this thread going and ask plenty of questions.  These guys are super nice and beyond helpful.  Hope to see some progress soon! Good luck!

Ohhh noo noo I don't know what the story with that is. The seller had it posted as if it had an extra motor. Turns out it was inside a cut frame. The frame would be good for a bobber build or something though later down the road but for now ill be sat aside.

Thanks for the info  2strokeTrush.  I have been going though some builds in my spare time and a bit before i registered but I wanted to get posting before I got the chance to get though them all.

As for most of them pics they were taken literally as it came apart so nothing was cleaned and none of the gasket areas were cleaned up yet.

Ic you are from Baltimore. Where? I have a group of friends into Mid 90's Honda's out there in the Glen Bernie and Annapolis area.  None of them have bikes though.

Will have some updates tomorrow.

Took some time after work to visit an old friend who is a bit of a pack rat. He had a few old magazines setting around.

The I decided I was sick of working on the floor and built a table for the bike to be up on. 







Also took the case apart.







Cannot get all of the studs out without them feeling like they might snap....






Need a different bolt for my puller to get the generator off.  >:(


After I took everything apart I masked everything off and began bead blasting.

Just wanted to get an idea of how it will look.






That is it for today. Would like to get the upper and lower case blasted tomorrow.

got the generator off of the crank so I can install new seals.



Stripped the tank and found some dents that had been filled.  So I worked a bit on them.





Kind of a pain in the ass getting the old Honda badge bracket off, but it needs to go.

Had some fun with the hammer tonight.









Is this rebuild-able?  I don't really like any of the replacement options and want to keep it simple without modding this tanks outlet.
