78 GL1000 Conversion
« on: September 27, 2014, 10:51:41 AM »
Hey guys,

Picked up most of a front end off a 78 GL1000 for a great price ($65)...came with wheel, calipers, forks, MC and one rotor. Did not have the speedo drive unit, triples and was missing one of the rotors.

I am curious if I can use my 750 steering stem and have a friend, or somebody on the forum make some triples?  I'm not setting any major barriers here, but am I forgetting something obvious?

I was going to convert to an acewell or something with a magnetic pickup I think so the speedo drive unit isn't essential, but I'm guessing I'll at least need a spacer, right?

I'd look for a GL1000 triple unless you want a very custom look and are willing to PAY

Yes, to the spacer. The rotor should be available............sometimes on a bent rim.

When you take the forks apart to change the seals, be sure to note any wear in the tubes at the seal area.  If evident but not serious, you can rotate the tubes so the wear area is to the side for extended use.  Sometimes the great deal includes a set of tubes that are gouged from lack of fork-oil and worn seals.

I'm fine with the custom look and I had mentioned that I have a machinist friend which will cut down on the costs.  I can pick up a GL1000 triple cheap enough, but I don't like how high the risers are on the triples anyway.  As long as you think I can use the 750 steering stem and machine up some triples to fit then I may look into that.  If it's too cost prohibitive or work intensive I can just pick up the triples.

Thanks guys.
