so you can infact use lower than the manual spec oil level?like I said not 50% less or such, and it doesent matter brand or road or dirt, show me where you must never ever use less than the spec level?most manuals say do not overfill!pretty feeble argument against never using less fork oil so far.

Dave,  yes you can use very small amounts less to get the manufacturers specs or to balance both fork legs,  as long as you know how much air is in the forks, you know the limits of the travel, you know how to measure sag , you are basically adept at modifying suspension, there is a very fine line between getting it right and getting it wrong, as your link clearly states, most people wouldn't have a clue as to how to do this properly, the fork oil level shouldn't be used to soften the suspension. Originally you said 20-30mm mate, that just under an inch to just over an inch and I wouldn't take that much oil out at all, the only reason i would take a small amount of oil out is to get the forks to the manufacturers specs or the specs of the suspension being used. I can't find one link online where it says this is acceptable to do on a road bike anywhere, the only information i read was all based around the manufacturers specs and making minute adjustments for racing, to make both forks perform the same, nothing for a street bike, other than to achieve the correct suspension travel, once the correct level is achieved, alterations to viscosity is the way to alter the feel..... I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you mate.... ;)

Here's forking oil for $3/qt. eye balling the level on the side of the bottle as you pour in the forks.  :)

Speaking of tires..... How often do you guys have to pump them up on average? I feel like my pressure drops pretty quick.... Not immediately but not like my car

Thought this was kinda interesting... My clymers manual recommends 6.5oz of ATF for the CB550 in one section and then recommends 5.4oz of 10W-30 Oil in another section. It's as if they've compensated for the lighter weight of ATF by increasing the amount or its a mistake.

UPDATE: I guess different amounts are due to different fork type:

CB500 K0-2 : 5.4 (160cc)  Replacement  /  5.3~5.6 ozs.  (155~165cc) at disassembly
CB550 K0-2 (1974-76) : 5.4 ~ 5.6 ozs. (160~166cc)
CB550 F0-1 : 5.4 ~ 5.6 ozs. (160~166cc)
Cb550F2 and CB500/550 K3 (77) -  4.8-4.9 ozs. (145-150cc)

the honda manual for the 500 and 550 recommends ATF.

for the 550:

p. 137 CB550K
Front fork oil capacity: 6.3-6.5 oz. 185-191cc

p. 157 CB550F
Fill the fork pipe with ATF up to the specified level mark.
Capacity: 165-170cc (5.6-5.8 oz.)
to fill dry fork assembly

same page:
oil change
… and fill the fork pipe with new ATF from the upper side up to the specified level mark.

what does this tell us?
  • the K versions take more oil than F
  • small variation in oil level is ok even by honda
  • honda and clymers manual recommend different amount - i'm not even gonna bother checking my haynes...
  • you need less oil when re-filling a fork after draining than after re-assembling a dry fork.
  • just check the hight of the air chamber before draining to have a reference, then refill to the desired hight with not too much less oil then recommended, and not so much that there's no more air.

all this is not religious dogma. if you find the ATF to light or heavy, just switch to a different weight oil and see how you get on. height of the air chamber can also be varied slightly.

Just talking to another member here about this subject and came into something I hadn't mentioned yet, when we were setting up my mates race bikes front suspension, one thing he did was too mix viscosities to get more flexibility on fork adjustment, like mixing equal amounts of 5 weight and 10 weight to get roughly 7.5 weight, that is another option I would consider when adjust a front end as well as modifying the holes in the damper to alter damping rates, all this should be done by someone with a decent amount of experience with front suspensions. After that suspensions became far more adjustable with multiple damping  and preload settings.
