Help with my new 400F wiring diagram? Re-wiring with M-unit
« on: March 11, 2015, 11:53:00 AM »
Hello, I am starting to rewire my 400f due to the old wiring and connectors starting to fall apart.  I decided to use a Motogadget M-Unit to control everything in order to decrease the complexity of the wiring. I drew up a wiring diagram and realized I still have a few questions I need to figure out before I start building the harness.  Most of the questions I have are not related to the m-unit specifically though.

1.   I figured that the neutral switch should be part of the starter relay circuit to keep from trying to start the engine while in gear, but it looks like it wasn’t originally.  Should I add it to the starter relay circuit?
2.   Are indicator lights (neutral/high beam/oil light) supposed to be added in series with a given circuit or in parallel?
3.   When connecting the red power wire from the R/R (Ricks combined R/R) to the battery/main power, I am a little confused as to where it is supposed to connect.  Should it go directly to the battery + terminal, before the fuse, to the battery cable before the fuse, the battery cable after the fuse, or to the + terminal on the M-Unit?
4.   Does anything in my wiring diagram look incredibly wrong or stupid? I did take a circuits class once but I almost failed it so I am no expert.

Green lines represent grounds, blue represent small control wires (22 gauge probably) and other colors are power wires (16-18 gauge)

Thanks for any help!

In sequence....
1. So it should be aux---kill---ign?
2. I was planning on using the aux section for all auxilary power like tach/Speedo/etc. is this correct or should I use a different output section? I won't be using any of the stock wiring harnesses because of how bad of shape the connectors and insulation is. I was thinking about running a larger gauge wire along the length of the bike from the aux output and using that to tap into any aux power. Does that make sense?
3. So you have red r/r---fuse---battery+?
4. The r/r should connect directly to lock? With ign switch in between? I was planning on using the stock ign switch but possibly relocating it to a different part of the bike

Here is my new wiring diagram. I'm still not sure of the neutral switch wiring. Can it be used in line with both the neutral light and the start circuit?

on the stock 400f wiring diagram I have, it shows black to oil/neutral light to alternator connector to switch to ground. So wouldnt power to the indicator lights still come from aux? Or is it tapped from black after the ign switch? Also, can I use a single button to the m button for off/high/low headlights? I like to be able to turn the headlight off if possible

I know i'm a little late at replying to this, but i just finished my diagram for the M-Unit / CB400f. I haven't done the work yet (that'll be next weekend), but i thought i would share incase you can learn anything from it (or, maybe i got something wrong and i can learn from you).

Couple of differences though:
- I'm not using an M-Button.
- I'm not putting in indicator lights.
- My tail light / brake light are being wired through the same port (the M-Unit will let you configure this).
- I might not put in a kill switch before the Dyna (is this necessary? the start / stop button will serve this function).
- I'm only using 1 fuse to be located before the battery.
- My Ignition switch doesn't go to the battery *** (you have it going straight to the battery, but the M-Unit manual says not to do this).

Let me know if you have any questions or if you see that i did something wrong.

TMood.

Thanks for the info. I'll make the edits this afternoon.

Side question though: do you know what type of fuse I should be using (vehicle main fuse that is)?

Thanks

G'day fellas, I had to say something as I am definitely going to be needing this help when I get to that point of my build. I too am going to be adding a m-unit to my 400 and will need this help for sure.
I was trying to find a way of saving this thread to my profile or something, is there a way to do this for future reference? I don't want to lose this info
Cheers JP.
