brown/white wire coming from left control
« on: April 03, 2015, 12:07:24 PM »
I have a CB750k7.  I bought a new harness for and i'm installing it.  There is a  brown and white wire that is used to light the speedo/tach lights and also comes from the ignition switch.  There is also the same wire brown/white that comes from my original left control.  I don't see that wire on the diagram.  what is it used for?

]unless i missed it, the digram for a k7 didn't show a brn/wht to the left control, or at least the diagram i saw didn't. A k6 shows that wire, and it looks like it supplies current to the left side control (turn sig. portion) and just plugs in with the other brn/whites. Not sure how it works tho, but maybe someone can explain it better

Did you perhaps get a K8 harness?  It has a brown/white wire.

I'm thinkin you have a k6 control. Things get a little weird between the k6-k7, and the k6 is kinda by it self in some ways.
Looks to me like that wire is a key on powered and sends current to the signals. It looks like that brn/wht wire ultimately gets power from a black key on power wire

I'm certain I got a K7 new harness, but that's not my issue.  The issue comes from my control and correct, I too didn't see it on the diagram.  I agree that in all cases it looks like a key on supplied power.  I just wasn't sure what it went to on the controls.

It's hard to believe the PO would have changed the controls but you never know I guess.  I found a few quarks on the bike that didn't make sense.

I guess I could connect it but I'm just not sure what I'm accomplishing.  I can't see how it was hooked up before because there's only three terminal connections.  one for key, one for speedo lights, and one for tach lights.

I'll probably just start measuring around with the dmm and see what I find, I just wanted to see if the forum had any ideas.  Thanks for the feedback.

You might check out a wire diagram for a 76 k6. Maybe give you some ideas? If i'm reading the k6 diagram correctly, the signal lights are fed thru that wire. Seems like all positions in the turn signal switch have that wire in common (?)...just a guess..
The two models (K6 and K7) are different in the way power is delivered to the turn signal switch, and because of that, there are fewer connection points in the main harness of the k7 for brn/wht. Can you check your old harness to compare the new one to? Do the  sigs work? Not 100% sure, but if you can't get signals to work, i'd bet if you hooked that brn/wht wire to a key on, fused power source, your turn sigs would work. Again,  just a guess. Maybe look at k6 AND k7 turn sig switch configurations and it'll make more sense. ..... and just in case, Always be careful and take precautions to avoid electrical catastropy when doing ANY type of electrical trouble shooting. 8)

If the left control has a brown/white wire then it's a K6 control.... it will work with a K7 wiring loom, but the brown/white will need to connect to the brown/red ( which is power for the headlight, from the headlight fuse )  :)

That brown/white wire supplies power ( from headlight power ) to the front running lights in the turnsignals. If you don't need the running lights you can leave it disconnected.

If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

So i had to disassemble my controls to troubleshoot the headlight and chased the brown/white wire.  It connects to the same things as the Horn buzzer brown/blue wire.  So it has contact when either turn signal is on.  i looked in the back of my manual and don't see any wire harness with a brown/white and a blue/brown.

Still very confused but I know I can just cap it and forget about it.

Look at a K6 diagram instead, its there.  Looks to me like That brn/wht wire is necessary for every function/ mode of the left side control,

I have a cleymer manual with a K6 diagram that I referred too.  I agree the brown/white wire is necessary for the K6 but I also have the brown/red wire that connects to the other side of the fuse (same function as the K6 brown/white wire).  As is, everything works without that wire connected.

Maybe the modification spanner mentioned makes it possible for everything to work as it should. don't
know, so won't make any guesses rather than giving out incorrect information.

I just ran into this issue with finding brown/white in the turn signal switch.  Flybox confirmed that he has a brown/white in his K8 control same as I do.  I too have a new harness, but for a K8.  I dont' recall having to wire in the brown/white from the turn signal switch.  My blinkers don't blink and when I saw the brown/white in the left control, I thought that was the issue.  Flybox confirmed his brown/white and that he has to hold the switch in just the right spot - said there's nothing I could do.
