Ba ba ba batt errrrr ies !
« on: April 21, 2015, 09:08:03 AM »
Hey Everyone,

So Im looking at this Shorai Phantom battery for my CB500K0.  its a LiFeP04 12V 14amp with 210 CCA  if you dont feel like clicking on the link

http://www.amazon.com/Phantom-APP14A2-BS12-Polarity-Powersports-Battery/dp/B00819SHJ8

Im looking for anyones experience using a LiFeP04 battery and is there anything I really need to look out for?  I know people say OMG DITCH THE RECTIFIER and get a new one but I mean its a simple AC-DC converter... as long as its working... ummm.... its working.  Correct?

Cheers,

James

I've run a Ballistic that has basically the same specs as your choice in a bike with a solid state electric system.  No problems.  I have another that is two years old waiting for a build to finish and it's at voltage.  Easy enough to bring up with a standard charger, just can't leave it connected once the voltage is reached.  You can't use the sulfate busting chargers on these type of batteries tho.

If I was buying today, I'd take a look at this deal........   http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-BTL14A240C-Lithium-Phosphate/dp/B00F9LPJ8S/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1429637827&sr=1-3&keywords=ballistic+battery

I've used Alien Motion and Ballistic previously. I am now a fan of Shorai batteries and the proprietary charger.

I'm also in the Shorai (LFX14A2, which is same soecs as the Phantom battery you linked to) with their charger camp. They also strongly recommend a solid state reg/rec. I understand it like this: The old style batteries are much more forgiving when it comes to over/under charging. So the factory reg/rec, appropriately, isn't super stable...especially at 30+years old. These batteries are great but are finicky to the point you can ruin them with over or under charging. The new style reg/rec helps to prevent this.

I'm in the Antigravity  camp and have had good luck with Lithium batteries too.

Correct, the stock rectifier works fine, however the stock mechanical regulator should be replaced with an electronic regulator, IMHO. ;)
