cb550 charging system upgrade: rotor/stator options?
« on: May 30, 2015, 07:31:34 PM »
I'm looking to get a bit more output from my generator on my 76 cb550k, and to move away from the anemic original system.  I have done quite a bit of research but have only caught a few leads regarding what parts will work and procedural details, and those weren't great.
It looks like some have had success with a CBR600rr rotor/stator setup, while others have used VRF parts.

Has anyone had success with either of these, or other options not listed here?
and does that option require a new stator cover, or mods to the original? I have also heard that many cb650 parts can be converted to fit a cb550, does the charging system qualify?

Thank you

Definitely interested.  Anders developed an upgraded charging system for the 750, but is out of them, and he has not yet developed one for the 550.

Nice. The kit looks straightforward enough, but might be a little out of my price range. I guess what first turned me on to the swap-conversion was the economic component. I think the job could be done for under 40 if you're a clever/patient ebayer.

I'm hoping for a fairly substantial output gain though, so maybe the kit would be worth considering. I plan to convert to elect. ignition soon, which might draw a bit more amperage-- and in the distant future, would LOVE to take a crack at installing an EFI, which would largely increase e consumption.

So it's not likely that a stater/rotor system from a EFIed cbr600rr wouldn't get me to where I need to be amp-wise? if I could mechanically adapt it that is; if it's actually possible.

There's no cheap turn-key kit available or simple swap from a CBR600RR, yet.  The effort to go to EFI will not yield much in the way of performance gain, but it may gain you some fuel economy.

That's fine for me, I have some time and am looking for a challenge. I don't mind having to make a few mods, I just need engineering details I guess.
I will keep digging.
