It looks like I am getting a couple more projects
« on: May 17, 2015, 01:35:31 PM »
I won't have a chance to get them before next weekend, so it could fall through, but I have agreed on a price for two vehicles: a mid 70's Harley Shovelhead and a 2007 Yamaha Vino 125 scooter.

Both are intended to be flips to pay for the work on my 550 (if I ever finish the MG).

The scooter needs to be painted and have the headlight shell replaced, but otherwise seems in good shape.

The Harley has been buried in the owner's garage for about 20 years. It has a fascinating story. It was stolen in the 80's and recovered in Canada. The owner had to make several trips there to testify in the trial and the FBI actually paid to return it to him here in the Chicago area.

Here is a picture of the Harley, he says that he has the seat and tank. It should be interesting. Can't beat the price, $1,300 for the pair (with titles), the scooter by itself should sell for about that much once I get it back in good cosmetic shape.

Danny, I got friends that would be interested in paying for the shovel, I promise not to tell them what you paid for it ;) ::)...and I can't say that I can recommend trying to work on it before selling

couple fresh pictures. I will be dragging it (somehow) out of its resting place later this afternoon when my BIL gets home from work. I confirmed it is a '75. The speedo says 4100 miles, but it isn't original and the owner is not sure the actual mileage.

He bought it new in '75, but when it was stolen in the early 80's the thief changed a bunch of things including the wheels and tank, so I don't think that the gauges are original.

The calipers are locked, so getting it to move is going to be fun.

Once I get it to the garage I will find out if the engine is free, that will have a big impact on how good a deal this turned out to be.

Got them. We had to loosen the front calipers to get it to roll, but it got done and up on the trailer for the trip down the street (the seller lives a block from my sister). Both vehicles are now in the side garage next to my 550.

The Harley is on a Salvage Certificate rather than a title. This is a left over from when it was stolen and recovered in the 80's. Allstate had already paid off the claim by the time it was found, but since it was found in Canada and tied up in a criminal case at the time, they let the owner keep it after he went to Canada to get it. But since they had paid him, he received the salvage certificate rather than a title.

Since I am not a licensed rebuilder I can't convert the title to a rebuilt title. I may have to go the New Hampshire (Vermont?) route to get a clean title.

The rear rim is shot and the front is not that great either although it would probably clean up ok.

Scooter, 2007 Yamaha Vigo 125. The body work is in the back of the truck.

The calipers are locked, so getting it to move is going to be fun.

Try removing the bleeder screws. (after much soaking with penetrant [of course] and a six point socket)

Fortunately this vintage Harley has 2 piece calipers. We loosened the screws that hold them together, a couple raps with a mallet and viola, we could roll the bike.

even if the hd is kinda rough it is still a steal for a big twin,so think twice before you get rid of it,it could be a cool bike with work.

I've just never been much of an HD guy. A buddy had a late model Road King that I liked and I loved the short lived XR1400 sport bike. But I really want to finish my 550, and I am looking for a new job and will probably have to drive rather  than take the train, which means I will need a better car than my old S10 Blazer beater. So for me the Harley and the scooter are both just money making opportunities.

Finally started to do some work on these bikes this weekend didn't get as much done as I wanted because I went to my nephew's baseball game Saturday morning, then bought a decent car to replace my crappy S10 Blazer later in the day (2002 Saab 9-3 SE with 84k miles) THEN went to watch the Balckhawks in game 2 of the Stanley Cup final.

Sunday I picked up a set of wheels for the Harley (a alloy Sportster front and a mostly matching rear) and dug into the scooter since it needs the least to get it going.

I installed a new battery but when I turned it over, no spark. I don't seem to have power to the coil. I need to get a wiring diagram so I can track down the issue.

The cap for the oil filler is also the cover for the intake rocker. The rocker must have had a solid 1/8in play vs spec of .003-.005 in. The exhaust valve is just as bad, so I went ahead and set the valves and also installed a new spark plug.

By that time it was the end of the day and time to clean up for dinner and to head home. I decided to reinstall most of the body work to make sure (a) it was all there and (b) I had all the fasteners. unsurprisingly the answer to a and b is no, I am missing some of both.

I bought some replacement panels last week off eBay that are the correct royal blue color (the PO painted everything flat black, putz). This week I will hit the local Yamaha dealer and order the hardware and batter cover door that are missing.

Hopefully next week I will have a runner.

On the Harley front, in addition to the wheels I picked up a new ignition switch since it didn't come with a key. The starter motor is out and the PO said something about "fixing" it, but didn't say what was wrong and after almost 30 years apart I don't think he even knows. I think I will order a starter rebuild kit and just replace the brushes, which should deal with any likely issues.

Funny note, when I went to get the wheels yesterday I was talking to the guy about bikes, as you do, and he casually mentions that he just made a deal to buy a '71 CB750, a running CB750, for $600.

Anyway, this is very long post, so here are pic's of the wheels ($50 for the pair) and the scooter with the body parts installed.

This is what the scooter is supposed to look like, including the color. This one belongs to a guy in my neighborhood that goes to Northwestern.

Pulled the tank and carb on thw scooter and cleaned out 6 year old gas. The carb looks brand new, as it should on a scooter with on 4100 miles on it

You can keep the scooter Danny, but I'm liking that ol' shovel! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
