Finally started to do some work on these bikes this weekend didn't get as much done as I wanted because I went to my nephew's baseball game Saturday morning, then bought a decent car to replace my crappy S10 Blazer later in the day (2002 Saab 9-3 SE with 84k miles) THEN went to watch the Balckhawks in game 2 of the Stanley Cup final.
Sunday I picked up a set of wheels for the Harley (a alloy Sportster front and a mostly matching rear) and dug into the scooter since it needs the least to get it going.
I installed a new battery but when I turned it over, no spark. I don't seem to have power to the coil. I need to get a wiring diagram so I can track down the issue.
The cap for the oil filler is also the cover for the intake rocker. The rocker must have had a solid 1/8in play vs spec of .003-.005 in. The exhaust valve is just as bad, so I went ahead and set the valves and also installed a new spark plug.
By that time it was the end of the day and time to clean up for dinner and to head home. I decided to reinstall most of the body work to make sure (a) it was all there and (b) I had all the fasteners. unsurprisingly the answer to a and b is no, I am missing some of both.
I bought some replacement panels last week off eBay that are the correct royal blue color (the PO painted everything flat black, putz). This week I will hit the local Yamaha dealer and order the hardware and batter cover door that are missing.
Hopefully next week I will have a runner.
On the Harley front, in addition to the wheels I picked up a new ignition switch since it didn't come with a key. The starter motor is out and the PO said something about "fixing" it, but didn't say what was wrong and after almost 30 years apart I don't think he even knows. I think I will order a starter rebuild kit and just replace the brushes, which should deal with any likely issues.
Funny note, when I went to get the wheels yesterday I was talking to the guy about bikes, as you do, and he casually mentions that he just made a deal to buy a '71 CB750, a running CB750, for $600.
Anyway, this is very long post, so here are pic's of the wheels ($50 for the pair) and the scooter with the body parts installed.
