RE: Almost went down today hard!
« on: May 26, 2015, 02:49:24 PM »
I was so excited when got my K1, aka Pop-A-Wheelie on the road with a nice red inspection sticker to match the ruby red paint.  So I decide to go for a short ride at a "responsible speed".  Man I love this stupid bike, it accelerates like you would not believe.

When cruising along I start to think my 14 mm wrech for tweaking my mirrors is gone and I decide to get off at the next exit.  Well as I am getting off the rear tire breaks loose completely and I almost went down hard in traffic.

I get to the gas station and my rear wheel is coated in oil all coming from the sprocket.

I checked all hoses and oil pan and all are dry.  No cracks in case.  Looks like the rubber stopper on my auto chain oilier took a dump shooting oil everywhere.

Thanks Guys!  Lucky is right on life #2 now.  Guess the big guy is looking out for me.  I will be sure to PM 754 and get this sucker plugged up for good.

No it was no on 81, but was getting off 81 at the brewerton exit.  Going down there would have been a good chance of getting hit.

Wiped the excess off immediately, but will hit it again with decreaser.

Maybe over the winter I will send it off to one of the Honda masters to make it even faster!  Sure would be nice to know what it has for internals.  Right now having too much fun riding it.

I have not found the top end.  It just keep going faster.

I checked all hoses and oil pan and all are dry.  No cracks in case.  Looks like the rubber stopper on my auto chain oilier took a dump shooting oil everywhere.
Are you sure all that oil came from the front sprocket? Is the oilier screwed in tight? I had my K1 dump a bunch of oil in front of the rear tire when I first got it, but it was due to improperly connected oil tank lines. Also, if a bike has been sitting, and wet-sumps, it's common to fill the tank, and after running, the tank is over-filled when the scavenge pump forces the extra oil out of the sump, puking oil out of the tank vent.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

That's why  I also mentioned "to look it over well" as that sounds like quite a bit of oil. You sure do not want a repeat performance.  Is the chain oiler adjustment completely removed on the shaft and you popped a cork ?  There is some type of a cut up spark plug mod I think to plug the hole also I believe. An old Champion would work well maybe with its smaller bolt head.

Thanks guys I am glad I am ok too.  I looked at the tank and everyplace and all the oil was on the drive side.  The oil is coming from the chain oiler, but could be the counter shaft seal as well.  When it is parked I get the classic little puddle run down the kickstand.

I sliced a 3 mm o-ring and threaded it through the oilier hole and cut the excess then reinstalled the sprocket, retainer, and chain oilier.  Plan is to go for a couple miles pull over and check for oil, and repeat until I am satisfied.

It appears as though the little rubber stopper on the end is wore out.  The left side of the rear tire was and wheel well was completely coated with oil.  What a mess.

I'm going to test out the fix and will let you guys know how it goes.

Last night I threaded a 3mm o-ring in the oilier hole trimmed the excess off and reassembled.  It seems to have worked as there was no oil on the tire or rim and this is after 10 to 15 miles highway speeds.

Lubed up the chain and I should be good to go with no more oil slick worries.

It does have a bit of a head shake / hop at 40 to 50 MPH, but smooths out after that.  Not sure I want to do head bearings if it can be put off until later.

Really? You just survived a potential life-ending hiccup due to maintenance/faulty parts and now you are rolling the dice again with a known issue? I have to question your logic and senses here, Chewy. Nobody wants to work on things, but to operate a motorcycle with known stability/safety issues is just plain foolhardy. Sorry if thats too blunt.

I hear ya Cal, maybe I should order up an all balls kit and be done with it.  Such a PITA taking the front end apart.  It only seems to do it at 40 to 50 MPH maybe it just the rim or tire out of true?

Yeah, Kyle, I did see that occur with a bike that came in down here recently. Checked balance & true. Found someone had put almost 5 grams of wgt on that were totally unnecessary. Rebalanced & true was o.k. No hop after that. Hope that's what you find.

Edit: Just remembered another bike with slight hop. Problem was a bad wheel bearing. Hope you get lucky & it's something simple like that.
