12 volt accessory power outlet?
« on: June 03, 2015, 06:45:10 PM »
Has anyone hooked up a 12 volt accessory power outlet to their CB750?

Wondering if it's an option for my stocker K2 (with a good charging system).

Due to the low amp capacity of the elec system, dont do it unless you really feel the need to.  I didnt.

If you don't have a battery maintainer type charger like the Battery Tender you should get one. The charging pigtail that you attach would work as a nice power outlet. You'd just need to get an adapter to plug into it. Small things like what you want to use shouldn't have an effect on the system. Larger loads can compromise a weak charging system.

i haven't done this but it's one of the things i'm thinking about. occasionally charging smaller things like phones, should be no problem. especially when you ride longer distances where the battery is actually charging. i'll try to see if i can also charge camera batteries this way and leave enough in the bike battery to run the bike the next morning. with a charged phone and camera i'd be all set on longer trips. but this will be a winter project...

if you need more, especially things that you want to keep powered during riding like heated gloves or similar, the charging system would need upgrading.

definitely put in a disconnect switch like cal says.

Ofcourse you can do this. No problem. Believe me, this 'discharge thing' is only a topic in this forum and everybody happily repeats everybody.
Although the output is certainly not overwhelming there's plenty juice for normal riding and some extra's.
Since decades the little PA slideswitch (to give lightsignals) on mine is lame. I always ride with headlight low beam on. The number of times that I discovered (for example when entering a tunnel and seeing the blue high beam idiot light on) that the slide switch must have accidentily slided in the on position causing both the low and high filament in the H4 to be on... Yet I never had a depleted battery.
Use the bike for what it was intended and choose a moped or pedal bike for in the city. You'll have no problem.

The stock 750 charging system isn't stellar but it isn't that god awful bad either if it's in good shape. My 77 F2 has a boyer electronic ignition plus I wired up a 12 volt power outlet (cigarette lighter) under the seat to power my Garmin gps that I use on long trips and so far my F2's stock stator, regulator and rectifier haven't had any problem keeping it's plain old lead acid battery happy.

I found an adapter from SAE to USB.   On the battery I have permanently mounted SAE pigtail for the battery tender.    Because of the SAE I did not want to use a car lighter outlet, the SAE is much better sealed and holds better.

Anywat the SAE - USB plugs in the pigtal and leads to the tank bag where I charge my phone or whatever needs it.

My K5 runs a GPS plus a 70W jacket just fine.

This pic shows 2 black boxes on the handlebars.  Behind the brake reservoir is a voltage display that also includes a 5mm coaxial outlet for my Aerostich heated jacket.  Between the speedometer and clutch handle is the GPS under the sun shade.

For these devices I use a single fused 10awg circuit.   Smaller wire would work fine but with a 6 amp load the voltage drop would increase and the volt display would be inaccurate.  I also want the highest voltage for my jacket so riding on cold Maine mornings is comfortable.

For each bike I make up a pair of wires with ring terminals and a blade fuse holder near the battery and an SAE connector at the steering head.  Preparing a bike for a tour means connecting whatever I need to that SAE connector

The SOHC 750 charging system is big enough and very durable.  I do, however, recommend a voltage display if you have larger devices like heated gear.  Also a good idea if you make many short rides and use electric start.

Been running an accessory plug on my 1976 750F for about 20,000 miles now, using it mostly for charging my phone.  No problems.

Where are you headed?

We're starting in NYC, heading northing to the Green Mountains in Vermont, shooting over to the Whites in NH, riding through interior Maine up into New Brunswick, over to Halifax Nova Scotia, crossing Fundy on the ferry then back down to NYC and looking for any and all swimming holes along the way. I'll be the only CB on the trip (two KLR's and one triumph Scrambler) hopefully I don't slow them down too much!

I did what Jerry said, I used the plug harness in for the battery maintainer (already fused) and made up a power outlet cable, it went into my tank bag and I could keep the phone and charger under the clear cover to keep it charged and where I could see it if I needed to pull over and check the GPS or whatever.

Thanks flybox. I always have my tenders quick connect pigtail under my seat, just I can just plug and play with one of the many ones on eBay.

Definitely going to do a test weekend with it before the big trip to make sure everything is kosher.

keep in mind that there are 1 and 2A USB ports. some devices need 2A but those that charge on 1, also do it on 2.
