Author Topic: 78' CB550K - Rear Wheel Issue. Please Help!!!! (Read 4816 times)

So here is the deal - I bought a 78' CB550K a few months ago that had Comstars installed. The previous owner made some modifications to the bike in order to make the Comstars fit (welded tabs in swingarm, different axles, drum, disc, speedometer sensor,...) and now I am trying to go back to OE spoke wheels and I have to undo his changes. The front went on no problem with the right axle, speedometer sensor, and brake disc, but the rear wheel does not seem to be behaving as nicely. When the rear is all assembled, the castle nut does not thread onto the axle far enough (there is a spacer/bearing on the sprocket side that sits partly inside the hub that seems to be taking up the required space that's needed to sufficiently thread the castle nut on. It came with the wheel I bought, not the axle).

Here are the OE parts for the rear that I ordered - 77' 550F wheel, 78' 550K drum, and 78' 550K axle with both chain adjusters, 1 spacer, and a castle nut.

Is there anything wrong with the setup I am trying to fit? Is the issue that my bike is a 78' 550K and the wheel I bought is off of a 77' 550F? Like I said, I had no issue with the front and I used the same setup - 77' F wheel and 78' K axle.

Any input you provide will help.

The axle fits perfectly without the wheel installed, without having to pull the swingarm wide to fit (disregard the axle being put through the wrong way).

Here is a shot of the wheel with the axle installed but not on the bike. On the sprocket side - everything is in contact and looks good. On the drum side - the chain adjuster overhangs the threads by 1/4" (reason why the castle wont thread all the way).

Next up is the wheel and axle installed on the bike. The sprocket side looks good, but notice that on the drum side the swingarm isn't wide enough to make it to the chain adjuster. Additionally, the chain adjuster overhangs the threads by 1/4" which doesn't allow the swingarm to sit on a level part of the axle (even if we pulled the swingarm wide enough to make it fit).

So far everything I have seen leads me to believe that the bearing/spacer on the sprocket side that sits partially inside the hub, is not correct. If it were 1/4" less protruding out, it would allow the swing arm to rest on a level part of the axle, allow for the castle to be threaded all the way, and would allow the wheel to sit in the center of the swing arm.

Please let me know what you guys think!

By just eyeing it up, it looks pretty straight. But I cannot 100% confirm that, I will check it out tomorrow.

The 550F swingarm has slimmer chain adjusters and and thinner ends where the axle goes through - you only got one 78 550K spacer when you got the OE parts - you need the other spacer too! -the 550F spacer is wider and will not work in a 550K swingarm.

Looks like your spacer is too wide. I am almost certain different year 550's had different width swing arms with different width spacers ('78 550 K4 is 31mm-ish). Another thing to consider is how aligned your sprockets are. With the proper spacer you should be able to look down the rear sprocket like a rifle sight and see it in line perfectly with the front sprocket. Keep in mind that even with a proper spacer, the sprockets could be misaligned.

Haha yeah but thank you for the reply. Anyone know where I can find one? So far I've only found this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/2415-Honda-CB550-CB-550-Rear-Axle-Assembly-/360508502944?hash=item53effb33a0&vxp=mtr I only need the one spacer, but don't mind having the rest. I'll need to ask if it is off of a K (not an F again). And I'd imagine a 76 will work for a 78.

The 550f have wider swingarms so the f spacer won't work correctly.

It looks like the 77-78 k and f share the same hub I know the 74-76 k and f were different and not interchangeable with each other.

the sprocket side spacer is easier- there are only two sizes 500/550K, and 550F(wider). The brake side spacer comes in four different sizes-

earlier model 500/550K, later model 550K, earlier model 550F, later model 550F, so it's lucky that you have the right spacer on that side at least!

Yeah I do. And I thought about that, but I didn't know the correct width of the K spacer (assuming I have an F spacer since the wheel I bought was off of an F). Does anyone know the width of the sprocket side busing/spacer for the K?

Needs to be about 6mm shorter - I don't know exactly- just went out to look and found my garage flooded (again doh!!) and it's the middle of winter here in Australia, maybe someone somewhere warmer feels like pulling their wheel off and measuring!? John

I am going tomorrow morning to a machine shop to have the spacer taken down. Mine measures 1.5 exactly. Does anyone know what the dimensions of the K sprocket side spacer are?

Sorry I couldn't help, but is there no one with the same bike here with the rear wheel apart who can measure this spacer? Number 6 in the fiche.

I can inform you tomorrow on the COLLAR REAR WHEEL SIDE partnumber 42311-323-040 and send dimensions and photo if that's the part you mean. It's the collar that sits between the drive flange and the sprocket plate, actually it sticks out of the latter. This collar was on these models:

On the collar inside the hub, partnumber 42625-283-000 the socalled COLLAR B REAR, REAR AXLE DISTANCE I cannot inform you about it's dimensions but that part was on all K and F models as well as other Honda's. It looks like you achieved that one (by mistake?).

Ok, part 42311-323-040 is shown in the pic. It's length is about 32mm. Note that it was only on K models, the F models had part 42311-390-000.
