I took a stock fender, drilled out the spot welds and separated it from the mount, then bobbed the front, moved it up and forward. Then I spot welded it to the mount under a lucas taillight and under the seat. That way you still have the rear bead all the way around and save the chrome if you want it. Could even be riveted. This was on a 750, I believe the 400 fender reduces in width at the mount, it might make it harder to do. The lucas light tucks in under the sear back on a 400 too.
