It looks like your aluminum belt-box has holes to allow the mag to mount standing up *or* lying down...Is that right??

Yes the hole,s are positioned 45 degrees apart from the center line of the shaft so you could
position the mag at 4 differant locations if clearance allowed

big_jim - Is your magneto housing only drilled & tapped for two bolts?? Mine has 4 holes/4 bolts...

Good morning
This is Jim's easy timing of the ARD
hope it works rich
 
real fast
I have mounted the ARD on the bike
and I am ready to set up the degree wheel
 
1. Find TDC on #1 then turn motor so degree wheel is 34 to 36 degrees BTC
 
2 Is this where the points start to open?
 
3 If so then I assume that this is when the number 1 piston fires
 
4 bolt up housing, slip rotor into place, install cap and plug wires
 
then go riding
 
hope its that easy

Let me see if I can paraphrase the ARD/Triumph instructions...   ::)

Turn the pulleys...until the points of the magneto are just beginning to open...set the piston...36 degrees before top dead center on the degree wheel...

My reading is that the points open at 36* on compression stroke...does that sound right???   :P

ahhhhhhhhhh rich, thats the ticket.

but if the cap is marked #1 and thats where you want the rotor to fire first
you still have to have the points open at 36 degrees and at that point the rotor should be in the
position to send the charge to the plug

I think I am making this too complected

I just need to go and set in front the bike and take a long hard look at it and figure the damn thing out

Been a few years, but...

You want the degree wheel to be set at TDC = 0*...I use a dial indicator with a long stem down the spark plug hole...you need a pointer attached to the case so you can bend it to point at the degree wheel...0* at TDC...

The rotor should be pointing at # 1 lead/plug wire...You leave the pulley (it is the crank pulley on mine) just snug until you get the #1 piston at 36* BTDC and the rotor is pointing at #1 lead...a continuity tester/light helps here...I have a vest pocket job with two alligator clips...as you rotate the crank and look at the light, it should go out just as the degree wheel passes 36* BTDC...if it's off, un-snug the crank pulley and rotate it slightly one way or the other...the bigger the degree wheel, the more accurate the timing...keep snugging down & unsnugging the grub screws until you get it right on...then snug them down good...

Keep in mind my memory of these is some 35 years old...   ;D

It would not surprise me to find my method was back-asswards...   :P

I was just wondering how to orientate the rotor to where the mag fires on #1

it has to be where the cap is marked #1 (duh) and if you hit 36Degrees and the light goes out and you are on #1 then

BINGO

lets go riding.................Or in my case I need to make brackets for the fairing and the rear sets, new tail section, weld collector up, ETC ETC ETC ETC ETC

dang. should be finished in the middle of winter lol

The shaft has a keyway, but the pulley doesn't...so no key...on mine, anyway...

If you've noticed, the mag pulley is the only one with a tapered bore...and two threaded holes so you can make up a "pulley puller" to get it off; the crank pulley is straight-bored and held in place by set-screws...I don't like them setscrews...   >:(

If there is a way to machine a flat on the straight shaft to give the set screws more areas to hold
is the way to go but oh well

will take pictures of timing and video when its running

to bad we don't have a way to send the smell of race gas over the internet

Just in for all of us MkII owners!

The distributor cap and rotor on the ARD MkII for the 750 are off of an early Fiat 600 (early to mid sixties).



Note this is not the same cap as a Fiat 600D (later model), and seems somewhat hard to find .I got mine off of ebay, but could only find one place online to get the cap, and it was in Germany for $50. The rotor is the same as the ones for the later Fiat 1100's, but the 1100 cap doesn't have the 90 degree angle on it. The cap is probably the right size, but looks like a standard auto dist. cap. They're easy to find, and I don't think they would interfere with the engine when mounted, so it might be a solution also.

I bought 2 of the earlier caps though (and not for 50 bucks either  ;)), so hopefully I should be ok for awhile... ;D

Haven't received the custom-welded beltbox from big_jim yet, but I did get in some square aluminum tubing and the new Fairbanks-Morse magneto from MainelyMagnetos today...Here's a couple of comparison pics, the new Maine Mag is the darker one with the red kill button; the other is the rebuilt ARD mag from the ARD CB550 magneto conversion...you can see there is a difference in the mounting bolt circle...the rest is the same...
