cb550 kick only wiring is this correct?
« on: January 02, 2016, 03:54:28 pm »
So I got a new bike and am trying to wire it up. It has a Dyna S ignition and coils. With a single state regulator rectifier from Ricks. Here is my drawing I made up. If this is correct or wrong can you let me know thanks

Uh, oh....if you have the Dyna S AND their "green" 3-ohm coils, your 550 will not be able to power them. You will always have a very low battery. The best you can hope for, if running the Dyna S on the 550, is to use either 5-ohm Dyna coils with it, or add one of my 2-ohm Resistor Packs to the 3-ohm 'green' coils (if that's what yours are).

Other than that" you need a healthy switch between the (+) of the battery and the rest of the circuit, so it can be switched on/off?

There must be such a switch between the (+) terminal and the side opposite the battery must feed BOTH the Reg/Rec unit AND the coils, where you show the reg/rec feeding the coils. So, disconnect that wire (Black) from the coils to the reg/rec, connect it to the switch and the (+) wire to the reg/rec, then connect the other side of the switch to the battery.

Is that clear, or mud?

The BLACK wire form the Ricks doesn't carry 12v, it reads it. As Mark said, you need a "switch" in place somewhere.

Take a lead from battery POS to a key switch. From the key switch, a BLACK to ignition. This allows you to turn ON or OFF the ignition. The BLACK from the Ricks can then connect to the key BLACK. This will tell the Ricks what battery status is: surplus or discharge so the RED from the Ricks can carry voltage to the battery. Wired as you have it, your R/R will not charge the battery correctly as it lacks a "status".

Your diagram also does not show a KILL switch? If you use one, use the BLACK from the KEY switch to KILL. From the RUN side of the KILL, run a BLK/WHT to the ignition and then you will have a scheme very similar to the stock harness. Leave the Rick's BLACK attached to the key BLACK as before.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.
