Tranquilo, Muchacho, tranquilo. Get a magnet, a hex wrench, and a screwdriver. Position the magnet near the broken piece, gently loosen the adjuster nut, and "bump" the valve loose. The magnet will grab the broken feeler gauge. Take your time, and breathe deeply.

I got it out. How much force is adequate for the .002 like at first when I put it in it doesn't go but then I push it in and then I can move it around.

Again if anyone is near northern jersey please stop by haha

There should almost be friction. About enough friction to just feel it, no more, no less. Even if you're off a tad doing this your first time, it will not be the end of you and your motor won't blow up.

dont force anything.
if your .002 goes in fine, see if the .003 goes in.
If the .003 goes in you're gap is still too big.
if it doesnt go in, recheck the .002....if it fits, move on to your next one.

I'm using a long flat feeler gauge now cause my other snapped so I don't feel like his is a very accurate way.. Getting pretty frustrated but I'm gonna cool off and do this.

Again anyone in the area just stop on by you'll know your close when you hear some curse words being shouted lol

Do what Flybox said. It sounds like you are making this waaaaaaay harder than it actually is.
You should feel a slight amount of drag on the feeler that should go in. The next size up should not go in.

Dos you are a train wreck! You still haven't performed a carb synch on this bike, and that was mentioned in January. You've got your timing right, and finally set the valves properly. Now, a simple carb synch (either on the bench or with a vacuum gauge) and you'll see what a difference everything makes. Buy ($150) or borrow, or make a DIY set.

The amount of money you've spent buying the bike, having the Shop rebuild it, and now you're selling it with a "I'm willing to be Raped" comment in the listing is ludicrous. You'll lose far more money than it will cost you to bite the bullet and buy a set of gauges. OR, take the carbs off the bike, and bench synch them.

When you took the carbs off, did you not notice that you turned the cable adjuster on the throttle linkage to get them off? Turn your throttle and notice which cable "pulls". Install that cable second. The first cable (usually the underside) gets installed first as it does not have an adjuster on it.

If you haven't removed the tank, do so to work on these things. It will give you some much needed room to see things clearly under the tank and service the parts/assemblies in need.

of course the noise is coming from the engine  ::)
you need to clean your carbs
you need to bench sync them
you need to complete your timing and advance check. you only said you 'think its ok'
its either right or it isnt.
you need to set your cam chain tension....cant do this till your carbs are done and you have the bike running reasonably well.

when all is done....THEN, you can do a vacuum sync of the carbs.  Its truly amazing how an accurate vacuum sync can quiet an engine.

...and if its STILL NOISY after all that....you have earned the right to complain .  ;D

is my day off, and im going for a ride  8)

Hey guys so I went for a ride today on my bike!

I talked on the phone with Gary for alittle bit and I adjusted my pilot air screws alittle bit and the knocking has gone way down.. Just need to sync them up..

I really don't want to take the carbs off but the bike isn't running bad at all. It starts right up, seems to have alittle bit of a fight at idle and I think because I need to vacuum sync. Bench sync is when you take them off and put a bit at the fin and make sure they are all even and a vacuum sync is when you use the gauges correct?

Yes, a vacuum sync is done with four gauges, dial or fluid type.
As I posted above, a vacuum sync is done only when all other maintenance items are complete.
You still have items to complete.

And you don't remove the carbs to vacuum synch. Still want to sell it for "Make me an offer..."?

Yeah yeah I know.

can you bench sync without taking the carbs off?

With vacuuming syncing I gotta find a kit somewhere, maybe this mechanic near me can lend me them for an hour.

Skip the bench synch and do a vacuum synch. If they're way off, and won't adjust properly (really close is perfect) then remove and bench synch. But first adjust the valves and set the timing properly.

I'd encourage you to spend the $150 and buy your own set. Morgan Carb Tune is popular, I use a 4 set gauge model that came with numerous adapters for different bikes that I like really well. They're currently in OK with another member...
