removing rubber sleeved inserts from a rear hub
« on: January 28, 2016, 11:15:16 AM »
I'm sorry for not knowing the proper terminology, but does anybody have any tricks for removing the rubber lined sleeves that the sprocket bolts go into on a 400F hub. One came out when I removed the sprocket but the other 3 will not come out and I'm about to send it to powder coat.

Cheers

They are the Cush Drive Rubbers.

When I asked this question a few months ago one suggestion was to burn out the rubber then distort the steel sleeve inwards with a fine drift.

A second suggestion was to use a hole cutter to do roughly the same thing.

I want to try to reuse them if I can. I was thinking of maybe using a wedge anchor?

That was the original plan! I only decided to powder coat because of the durability/chemical resistance factor. Now I'm thinking you're right and rattle can is the way to go. Definitely cheaper too.

Thanks for the feedback...

Bushing probably won't be effected by the cure temp. If you use a propane torch and heat the metal around the bushings they can be driven out easier. The rubber is attached to the steel sleeve enough that you can drive the bushings out with the correct size socket without damaging the rubber. The secret is to heat the surrounding metal enough for the bushings to loosen.

Mine were wore out and i removed the old outer steel 'sleeves' that were still in the hub carefully w/ a small chisel and a hammer.I bent them down and distorted the steel 'sleeves' and then pulled them out w/ a pr. of good needlenose pliers.

Very interesting Powderman. I was talking to the powdercoater tonight and she said that she has done them before without an issue. I was going to rattlecan them but she convinced me to PC them so I'm going to run them through and worst case scenario is I'll have to chisel them out later. It's definitely not going to get hot enough to turn them to liquid.

Has anyone else ever powdercoated hubs with these in?

My PC guy said not to as it will harden the rubber and they'll have to be replaced again shortly.

Maybe worst case is they'll come out easier after. So...I guess the next question is can anyone recommend a supplier for a new set of cush rubbers. :)
