heavy feeling
« on: February 17, 2016, 09:38:04 AM »
1976 CB750F  WITH  1976 GL1000  forks  and 1978 CB750F brakes
1983 kawasaki kz750 front wheel with yamaha rotors

New issue not familiar with at all.  Not sure how to describe it either.
Seems like i have to "push" to go to the right?  steers left normally....but a funny feeling going to the right.

air pressure at 37 pounds (tires say 40)

put on center stand and steering feels normal both ways

i did have the forks out (left the triples mounted to frame) so i could have the brake brackets welded up
slid everything back in place no real problems.

could i have a right side fork in a bind?  left side maybe?  what am i even looking for and how do i fix it?  Like i said not sure how to describe it other than it feels funny steering to the right with the weight of me and the bike on it, feels normal when on center stand.
thanks in advance

woah I don't feel so bad about mixing different 750 parts now

If I'm understanding this correctly, sounds to me like maybe when the bike leans to the right it's loading up a wheel bearing (or swingarm bushing?) in a way that binds something up. That could make everything feel pretty heavy.

Is that what you mean? Or is specifically with the handlebar steering? In that case it could be the headset bearings binding up under load.

rode normal before i took the forks out.  so its gotta be front end related i think, but i can check the swing arm bearings.  trying to remember now if i changed the front wheel bearings when i put the kawa wheels on...i kknow i did the rear...it had to have conversion bearings.   the neck bearings are tapered roller.....been maybe 2 years since i cleaned and adjusted and regreased them....will check them as well.   just did oil change on the forks last spring

ah if it rode normally before removing shocks, I would guess it's fork binding due to improper alignment. Check this thread and look at the suggestions people gave regarding fork alignment.

hehehheehe   that might be my issue.  i didnt remove the fender when i had the forks out....but i did remove the wheel from the forks without taking the fender loose......while they were out of the triples.  i did slide them home without the wheel tho.  looks like i gotta alignment to go out and do.  now i feel like a dummy.

37psi? Sounds a lot to me. I usually run at about 28 front, 34 rear going solo. Don't know how a high front tire pressure would cause the exact symptoms you describe, but I'm sure it would alter the steering characteristics of the bike in some way.

i was always told to run what the tire manufacturer said to run, not what the vehicle manufacturer said.  regardless of what shop i was working in.

+2 on this advice. Fork alignment is SOP on Dirt Bikes because of the long travel suspension, but it also works well on street bikes.

The GL 1000 front forks do have a tendency to bind/stiction if they are not aligned correctly. With all the different parts assigned there it could be a combination of issues related to fork binding.
Randak the Goldwing specialist has a procedure for alignment of the forks using a correct tightening sequence you may want to check out. Don't know how to tag sites so you will have to Google him.
Common sense.....isn't so common!

I agree with Flyin900.  My GL1000 forks were recently inspected by Matt Wiley at Race Tech.  He saw signs of stiction on the inside portion of the fork tubes which he attributed to alignment.
