Trying to solve an oil pressure problem. I have posted that I am not getting oil to my top end that I rebuilt. A member asked if my oil light was on and sure enough the bell went off in my head I have low or no oil pressure because the light is on all the time(I am a little slow). Things I have done to solve the problem 1. rebuilt oil pump and put back together correctly. 2. Took the oil pan off and replaced the screen cleaned the pan. 3. New filter installed correctly. What else could it be? Bike starts right up.

test vith a pressure gauge..remove the elektric pressure feeler..and Mount the gauge in that threddent hole.

but first

have you that oil line( rubber line) to feed the ekstra oil pump in the gearbox.
.if that not is in place..the screen /intake can not suck the oil up...air gets in the screen holder..so no vaccum can be made..and the pump can not lift the oil up
its only 550 vho have that tube..so the extern pump can suck up from the sump screen

Thanks for the reply. The tube(#5) is in place. I just replaced with a new one. I know the shaft is not broken on the oil pump. What else could it be? Do I need to prime the system some how?

only vay to prime is through the elektric pressure gauge.mounting hole.can you put a line dovn and pump some oil in there..make a adapter and use a oil can to pump..and try turning the engine just holding a finger for the hole..and refilling some times..
but normaly i just use a battery drill..take all plugs aut..and turn it vith the drill at the ignision /or generator schrev to the oil komes aut at the cam /valvecover...

Thanks again for the response. I have ran the bike at idle in the condition that it is in. I thought this might prime the system on its own. When I hold the pump in my hand and turn the gear I can see it moving oil from one side to the other. I will try removing the pressure gauge and adding oil that way way to prime it. Do you think priming it is the issue? Runs great otherwise.

I'm not up to date on your issues so sorry if this is repetitive, but oil sending units can fail and the oil light will stay illuminated. Re no oil to the top end...I'm assuming you know this for certain? If so don't run the bike again.

The oil flows to the top through the outside two crank journals, then through the lower cylinder locating dowels which hold the oil restrictors. If these restrictors are plugged, no oil. The oil pump relief valve and/or spring is in place, oil pump dowel o-rings are in place?

When you speak of oil sending units are you talking about the pump? I rebuilt the oil pump with a kit I bought from a member here so I know those o-rings are in place as well as the new spring. When I had the top end apart I made sure I cleaned those journals. That doesnt mean they could not have got plugged again. Even if those journals were plugged wouldn't the bike still register pressure thus the light going off. When I take the tappet covers off and the bike is running I see know oil in there sloshing around. I made sure the pump was pump back together correctly. Why else wouldn't it have oil pressure? I will try priming it.

here is a clip..i just filled the pump..took the elektric feeler aut and filled up the pump...then not teighten the feeler so air can blow by..and put the drill on the crank...

I normally do not like foriegn movies but that was pretty good. I will try priming the oil pump today and see what happens. Once this bike has oil pressure I can move on our weather has been so nice I want to get out and ride it.

i have not plugs in the engine..so it runs vith no friktion..but yes that bolt is thinny....better use the generator side..

i have the first ride on my cb 400 four ,today...scary Cold...and think i need new bushings in the rear sving arm..a soft feeling in the rear ship end

I tried priming the oil pump through the oil pressure gauge hole. Initially it took a fair amount of oil. I put the gauge back in and turned the engine over a few times. Put a little bit more oil in through the gauge hole again until it over run. Reinstalled the gauge stepped on it a couple of times and started right up. The oil light stayed on and I saw no oil in the tappet holes. What do I do next? Replace the oil pump? I am need of some advice.

.the pump can hardly go vrong...just Work bad..vhen the oil is hot ......
is it a error in the pump montage.

.is a ball valve put back inn..so it Lock for flow..is over pressure valve stuck open ??

thek the glide valve in the pump pos 4,and spring nr 5..it regulate the pressure..and stuck komplet open( maybe bypass ) all oil..im not shure how it work

Thanks for the response. I have another pump on the way to me and I thought I would give that a try. Could the pump be just worn out? Maybe that is why it quit running in the first place?

then the rest of the engine vill have some damage...crankshaft and rods is first to die..have the engine stayed autside so insekts can build nests..or blokade ..some bies likes fill all holes vith erth...its a desperate idea..

to test a used oilpump is a good idea...

I thought I had cleaned all the journal holes in the head out but I might have missed something. Do you know if it is possible to run a piece of wire(like guitar string) through the holes in the head down into the engine to clean out possible blockages? Or, using pressurized air through those holes?

think the head oil lines is ok..if the pump dont give pressure....the problem is dovn in the bottom.
..fron the pick up up to the pump..must be teight for air/oil..so the pump can suck ,up and prine it self....and them the pump it self and the pressure relef valve/..must funktion to build up the pressure..and stabile it..and then let it go on the main gallery..and first then up in the head....so the head is one of the last parts to get oil.....but the oil filter is in the vay..but even it have a poen safty valve in the filter housing..i think the pressure is there still...
(think the pump/reg valve in the pump is the first to thek/thange)..

Replace the oil pressure switch that drives the oil light and before that ensure that the wiring from sender to indicator lamp is not shorting to ground. When shotgunning replacement it is often better to start with the cheaper stuff first.

Stryboen, I have appreciated your responses. I will change out the oil pump when I get my new used one and see if that makes a difference. How do I tell if the valve within is working or not? I have opened it up a couple of times replaced the spring and all parts seem to move freely.

RAF122S, Where is the oil pressure switch located? I replaced the gauge on top of the pump with a new one.

its the same...pressure switsh/ is the elektric kontakt vho gives light in the oil light.and some have a gauge on the same auttake..

vhen.its on/gives kontakt to erth.. vhen no pressure,.........,and pressured diskonekt the ground.
.the bulb have positive power from the key..so the erth make the power flow..and light up the red instrument

You indicated earlier that there was oil in the top end when running. If there is no oil in the top end when running and you have a gauge on the oil pressure output and it is showing zero, then running the motor will cause damage. Assembly lube and oil squirted a few places only lasts a short time.

Did you change anything in the bottom end and what condition were the crank bearings in? Had the motor been previously assembled with RTV anywhere? Did you or previous owner blast the cases? RTV can break off and clog oil passages in the case or other oil passages and blast material can also clog oil passages.

No oil to the top end so if I do turn it on it is only briefly to check for pressure. I did not mess with the lower end at all except to take the oil pan off and change the screen. It appears to me the bike has never been opened up before. No signs of RTV anywhere. Do you know if it possible to run a long straight wire(guitar string) down the journal holes in the head just incase something is blocking the oil flow to the top end?

Sorry I didn't see your post. I think you may want to pull the oil pump and check the tolerances. It may need a new oil pump. The Honda Service manual details how you check that. Bearings could not be getting oil either, a really bad thing if that is the case... A guitar string shouldn't do any harm. No orifice ports to deal with, right?
A PO might have used too much RTV at one time and clogged an oil passage with it before removing the RTV, but usually they don't clean it up and a piece breaks off to lodge itself in a bad place.
