How to paint an engine?
« on: November 13, 2006, 02:14:10 PM »
So as not to jack Doug's thread.....

How do you go about painting an engine?  Do you have to rip the engine completely apart?  Anyone have links to someone that took pics as they went along?

Thanks, Bobby

I painted my engine in the fall and searched this site for tips and it has lots of great advice on different paints and such. One point that you will see and I cannot encourage you enough to take to heart is to spend 90% of your time cleaning and 10% of your time painting.

Have fun!

:-[ I was reading Doug's thread and I was so focused on not hijacking it with particular questions that I did not even think to do a search.  :-[

I wasn't trying to be snarky, it's just that this particular topic is covered very well in some recent past posts. Mine included ;D

the best thing I remember about painting was having everything else on the bike ready and then at the very last painting the engine and header. I had enough time for two coats of aluminium and a coat of clear and two good coats of grill black on the header before I insulated the frame and put it back in. saving it to the last allowed me to use the bike's engine heat to properly cure the paint. when I was finished, it resisted fuel and minor scratches pretty well for a spray can job.

I know you weren't trying to be an ass.  In fact we get a lot of guys asking the same 15 questions on my gun forum and you would think non of them have ever used the "search" before.  The funny thing is that it is usually me that brings this to their attention.  This make my post particularly embarrassing because I know better.  ;)

As for doing the engine last so it gets heat treated that seems like GREAT advice, thanks.
