This is what I'm thinking and I wanted to bounce it off whoever has some experience/opinions. Please tell me what you think, how you have done it in the past, with both positive and negative results.

I have my case halves, jugs, and cylinder head soda blasted, scuffed with maroon scotchbrite, wiped down with Eastwoods Aluma-prep, and I will give it a final wipe with acetone before painting.

The actual paint procedure, I was planning on assembling the engine, with no guts, using the old case bolts. Painting it, disassembling it, then reassembling it with everything installed, using new case bolts.

I could also tape everything off and paint pieces individually, but then the concern of masking off bolt holes comes into play.

What do you guys think? If I paint the engine pseudo- assembled engine the only things that need to be masked off would be intake/exhaust and the areas the covers would go. If I go this route... have any suggestions for masking off bolt holes/intake/exhaust?

Thanks

I did each individual piece separate.   Didnt want to ufck up my paint while disassembling/moving everything.
It might be tough to roll the engine to get inside the fins/nooks/crannies without ruining paint applied in another area.

3" painters tape and some fresh razor blades masks things quickly.

How did you mask off your bolt holes? Also, I was planning on hanging it from the rear motor mount from the ceiling. So it's kind of suspendEd in air at an angle

Just use some aluminum foil or blue tape.

The rubber caps that go on the legs of cheap fold-up chairs work great for sealing up intake & exhaust ports.  You can get different sizes at Home Depot etc
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.
