Jim French can WELD

So in the spirit of honoring the talented....

I sent Jim a head in far worse shape than the Butch Pace head.  It had chamber damage in all 4 chambers(among other things).

Again, far beyond being worth repairing.  But this one is special.  It had a very cool former life 8)

It's FAR from ready for battle, but it sure looks a whole lot better.  All the broken fins are now repaired as well.

Someone did a beautiful job milling that chamber afterwards too! Nice to have fantastic work following fantastic work  :D

Well, I did the post welding chamber shaping work(I do a little work with metal during my day job), but it's the welding job that really floored me.

The head still needs plenty of work.  Milling the deck, seats, guides, valve job, thread repairs, etc, etc.  But it's a start.

Jim must have nerves of steel to do tiny work like that.  He repaired a broken carb post for me that saved me having to buy a replacement carb body...Larry

Frankly, I have a hard time getting my head around the specialized equipment he uses.  I'm not used to hearing  reference to things like microscopes and lazer welding when it comes to aluminum repair. 

This is certainly no backyard operation.... ;)

While i've never used him personally, its great to know the quality of Jim turns out. Thanks for sharing this project with us George. Jim's on the top of my list whenever i need specialized welding.

Sorry Bill, but we are going to have to pass on this Rockingham.  Last Saturday at Atlanta Dragway, the crankshaft decided it had had enough.  I won the race, but Sunday, I started to do pre-race maintenance for Mancuo and discovered a oil pan full of metal.  Can't really complain because this crank has been in the engine about ten years and has at least 1000 passes on it, probably half with nitrous!  Having a virgin crank sent out this morning to be prepped, Bob at Accurate Crankshaft is about two weeks behind.  I will concentrate on the Summit Series as I am leading the pro bike points at Atlanta.  Ya'll have fun and be safe.

Jim,

Great talent deserves recognition.  I am constantly impressed by the depth of resources we have within our sohc4 community.

Many can overlook the fact that top level work is fairly hard to come by.  To my way of thinking, it requires several key components.

Great talent.
Dedication and time to hone that talent.
The sincere desire and enthusiasm for the work.
A solid foundation in ethics regarding customers.
Having the best equipment for the work on hand.
Equalling or exceeding the expectations of custoners.

Being affordable isn't and shouldn't be on the list, but it has been a great and welcome bonus. ;)

You, Mike, and Stetson(and others here) sure seem to fit the bill.

I took a set of carbs over to Jim and he did a magnificent job on them as well. 
My only issue is that now that I've seen his shop set up, I added like 5 things to my 'machines I want to own wish list'.

Oh...and Jim's a heck of a good guy, too.  Lots of fun talking motorcycles with him.
