Had a small accident with a scooter today
« on: June 06, 2016, 01:06:04 PM »
So I was riding my triumph to pick up lunch and a mile into my ride I made a left down a one way street. I gave a passing honk on the horn to let the fellow on the scooter know I'm there.  Sadly his reaction was to cut it left. He hit my arm and went down and I didn't fall at all.  Luckily this was at about 15mph. I stopped and got off my bike and helped him out.  We didn't speak a lick of English, after he checked his arms and legs he bounced back on the scooter and road off.

He seemed ok and I was fine. I've been growing angry at this as the day goes on. There are more and more of these scooters on the streets and a large majority of them are riding terribly. They get hit a lot or cause bigger accidents.

Also, questioning my decision to pass him.  Anyway, this is my first incident of this kind and I will learn from it and do my best to avoid another one like it.

Youtube is full of videos involving scooter operators with terrible, terrible instincts.

Like coming up to a row of stopped cars at a traffic signal and accellerating WOT into the back of a parked car...

Cyclists and pedestrians along cycle paths have been my bane. Absolutely pancaked a woman years ago while I was cycling and she was several people astride in her group. Me shouting from the rear, "On your left, On your left!" as warning to hold her path, suddenly she erupts to her left, arms at full mast and oblivious to anything around her. My right shoulder caught her left shoulder blade, and when stopped spinning like a dervish, she face planted. I was furious but never broke stride. Gave her and her crowd of self-absorbed pedestrians the glare from hell and parted with "Wake the F up!!!!"

In hindsight, I probably would do so again.  >:(

Ha, bicycles.  I do it myself, less than I should, but where we live is "The Country"  for people from DC.  They park at Vint Hill and happily pedal down our roads, ignoring rules and common sense - like 4 of them riding side by side.

Or they have an official race on our roads Sunday morning, with police assistance and all and you get yelled at by bicyclist on the way to church, because his time is more important than anything else.

OK, calming down now  ;)

I haven't hit anyone yet like that on my bike yet but I could only imagine what that wreck looked like.  ;D

Speaking of which, yesterday I was stuck behind six bicycles on local road, they were riding side by side so I laid on the horn and they moved to the side.  I was on Red.

They caught with me at the traffic light, so I started #$%*ing - they really make people hating bicyclist behaving like that - their logic was that it is noon and low traffic and riding side by side makes the group smaller.  You can't fix stupid I guess.

It is frustrating that cyclists who have every right to be on the road, often do not consider their impact on traffic safety. And they do sometimes create their own predicament. I try to give them a wide berth in my vehicles (motorcycle included) and be patient when they're climbing hills on roads with 50MPH speeds and they're creeping along at 30CPM in what looks to be 4th gear. It gives me time to read the Forum on my smartphone  ;)

I got zero respect from motorists (and a few pedestrians) when I used to bicycle commute.

One of the few times I did ride side by side down a road with another cyclist.  A man on a big ol cruiser motorcycle began to yell at us.
Four lane road, we too up too much of it for his taste.  Kindly suggested we "use the #$%*ing bike lane" - seemed he didn't know "south seattle bike lane" is synonymous with "broken glass collector"

Either way, my experience with bicycling in a metro area led me to the conclusion; if your ride only has two wheels, you're gonna get #$%*ed around by someone with an attitude.

So when I came up on a man riding his (rather beatiful) 07 Orbea Orca down the middle of a country road, I waited for him to move right.
When he didn't, i cruised up next to him, opened the visor, shouted "nice bike", waved, and continued on my way.

One of the funnest short rides around the PNW is the ~11mi circuit some call the Mercer TT.
We did it as part of the PNW meet-up for the first SOHC/Godzilla relay.
Twisties you could drag pegs on, and rarely above 3rd gear.
2nd gear on those sunny days when its filled with hoards of cyclists  >:(

I know it's easy for me to say, but what were you looking for him to do? Just keep his line as you went by, or move to the right as you approached? Either way, you passed while expecting him to do one thing and he did something else. Maybe a toot of your horn and wait for him to acknowledge you, or wait to pass until you are sure of what he's going to do?

Good response Bomber.

I find it incredibly arrogant that drivers feel they have the right of way and anything that impacts that is grounds for abuse.
We all pay for the roads and have the right to use them. Obviously there are rules of the road and should be respected but that goes both ways.
When I encounter motorists that do wonky things I tell them "all we cyclists want is predictable behavior". Drive by the rules of the road and I'll figure out what come next!

A couple of excerpts on the topic from the Washington Post.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/what-drivers-should-know-about-sharing-the-road-with-bicyclists-and-vice-versa/2012/09/15/4b8c9426-fe72-11e1-8adc-499661afe377_story.html

●Wonder why that bike rider stays five feet away from the row of parked cars as you’re trying to navigate a narrow street? Cyclists call it being “doored.” If someone swings open the door of a parked car, the cyclist who is too close goes down. With many drivers pausing to check text messages or finish phone calls before they get out of a car, there’s no telling when a door will pop open.

●It would be great if every street had a bike lane and every road had a wide shoulder, but they don’t. Even when they do, there are things that you might not notice that push cyclists into the traffic lane. It’s stuff you roll over — potholes, sewer grates, pavement cracks, branches, broken glass, junk that falls off cars or out of trucks and the McDonald’s bag somebody tossed out the window.

●A little patience could save your life. Wait to pass that cyclist until you have a clear view ahead and are sure there’s no oncoming traffic.

●Riders are supposed to stay to the right. Drivers are supposed to stay well clear of them. By law in Maryland and several other states, drivers must stay three feet from a cyclist. Don’t expect to see cops out there with a yard stick, but if you cause a crash, you could be charged with a three-foot violation.

You never see a motorcycle parked outside of a psychiatrist's office!
