Brake Disc Locks
« on: June 26, 2016, 09:59:17 AM »
Anyone got a brake disc lock on their CB550? Do the rotors have to be drilled in order to use one or are there any ones that can reach to the holes right after where the brake pads grab?

You can probably find a long-hasp padlock that would work.
But remember locks just keep honest people honest. ;)

I use a Xena disc lock but my rotors are drilled. I haven't seen a disc lock that has that deep of a throat. But I like CycleRanger's pad lock idea.

You could use trailer hitch lock too:

True, all it takes is three guys to lift the bike into the back of a pick up truck and away they go to a chop shop to part it out.

I've been looking into the Xena ones. Did you get one with an alarm?

Definitely gonna pick this up for a little extra security until I get my rotor drilled. I'm not looking forward to sending it off just yet though.

Anyone do any riding with just a rear brake? Haha.

downside of brake disk lock is noticed the first time you forget it's there and start to ride off.
#2 downside is someone tries to steal your bike because they don't see it, it locks the front wheel and they drop the bike and leave.

IF you have a longer cable or chain lock, then you have a visual deterrent for casual/impulsive/meth-addict thieves, and you have an actual deterrent to the team with a van who are looking for fast/easy "throw it in the back and leave in 2 mins" theft.

Any lock can be defeated with some energy (and/or frozen liquid nitrogen).  So I like the ez-ones that deter non-pros.
Like there is a heavy MASTER 4 number combination tumbler with heavy cable that is long enough to connect frame to a standpipe and also weave my helmet and maybe a jacket sleeve through if I wanna walk off at an event.

I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

No, I just got the X1. It's small and I keep it under my seat hump next to my battery. I like it a lot, easy to put on and take off (with the key I mean, haha).

I'm using one of these.

No doubt they're available anywhere as different brands. Perhaps not as effective as a a disc lock but still a visible deterrent.

There's also no chance of you trying to ride off with it still fitted.

I'm also in need of a lock to my CB750. Today only the steering lock.
Locked hand brake lever might end up in cut hose from MC under head light, or just unbolt it, 14mm head.

A huge heavy chain is not transportable, only disc lock left, right?

Screaming alarm might be something? http://ridescorpio.com/secure/#section-1

Regarding alarms, I have an M-Unit and they have alarm capabilities. Anyone know the details on it's functions? I think it will sound the alarm until your battery dies...which in my eyes is pretty stupid...especially if you have a LiFe battery.

I know you can set a pre alarm and adjust sensitivity. But curious on the duration of the alarm.

As for the argument that people can just lift it and put it in the back of a truck, of course. I take these disc locks, steering locks and brake lever locks as a level 1 deterrent. It will only stop someone who wasn't intending on steeling a bike that day. Or it may make the thief move to the next bike that doesn't have a lock on it.

Luckily, our bikes don't go for a lot of money on the market. I try to park next to the most expensive bikes I can find, haha.

Get an alarm with a GPS locater, not very expensive. A loud alarm scares off the thief so he can go do it to someone else. I have my sound alarms set to a 2 minute delay but goes off on my key fob immediately giving me time to greet them with my 9mm.
