WHERE TO GET SMOOTH HANDLEBAR TOP CLAMP ?
« on: November 21, 2006, 08:13:29 AM »
As the topic states, My buddy who is building the "starship" bike is in need for a smooth top handlebar clamp to replace the idiot light/dashboard.

I am comming up empty handed trying to find one, although I know I have seen them for sale somewhere on the net...

Anyone ?

I think it's Chippy550 although the pictures in his gallery are not really clear.

Ask him!

Contact Lowrider Tommy (LRT) on the Honda chopper board. I think he has his own set he sells that are flat:

http://www.lowridersbysummers.com/parts/index.htm

Otherwise you cut and polish a stock one (and tig in the holes).

edit: oops, thought you wanted the whole top clamp, not just the part that goes around the handlebar. Try using the 750F claps. They are two seperate pieces but no idiot lights and will polish up really nice.

Hey PT, tell him to exhange the front end with that of a GL1000.  Under $200 to swap, you get larger, better forks, and a smooth clamp.  I'll send ya pics when I get my parts back from powdercoating.

He isnt running a GL frontend - he is running the stock CB750 deal - so I take it the above mentioned clamps wont work/fit ?

I think chippy said he IS running the GL clamp on his 550.  The clamps should be the same because there is probably a minimum width that the bars need to be safely clamped.

I believe there was an early year that had all the idiot lights in the guages and the handle bar clamps were just two smooth caps.  On one of carpys builds he ordered some from Honda

I think it is the K0's. F0-F2 they are two smooth caps also as the idiot lights are between the gauges. The early Police cb750s used a cb77 style headlight and had smooth clamps also.

It bolted right onto my 71'  500, and my 74' 750 looks the same...it is not a "PRECISION" fit (For $12)  but it has worked fine for 2 years now.. I had the 4 idiot lights on my stock clamp..

if you want a one piece, the one chippy has would be the way to go, i guess.

if you want the two seprate ones, like mentioned for the f models, you can make them from the original clamp you have. if you look at the underside of the clamp, you will see that if you cut the middle section out, it will leave you two seprate caps shaped just like the F ones.

if you are good with a grinder and file, it wont look like something you just hacked up. it will look identical to the stock pieces. just cut, grind, file, and polish. quick, easy, and, best of all - free. did it on mine before i went to clip ons.

MG Products. http://www.mginproducts.com/Honda%20CB750%201969-76%20Triple%20Tree.html
Will that fit the CB550.  Please say yes :)
Chippy has a 550 , and he is running a clamp simiar, so I am guessing it will fit your bike....

The top clamp vonblond posted is different from what chippy is running as it is a whole top clamp. As far as I know it will not work with a 550 because the distance between the forks is different for a 550 than a 750. YOu may want to ask them if they can sell you a blamk one and have a local machine shop machine it to your 550's needs.
